switching OFF the DRL's

Lots of posts regarding how to switch DRL's on - but how do you programme them off without having to switch the side lights on. D4 2015

As they're now a legal requirement (happy to be corrected on this) on your D4, you'd need to inform your insurers as you'd be modifying the standard spec. of the vehicle. As DRL's are supposed to be a safety feature, they might query your decision.

Sticking. My neck on the block, the legal requirement is to have them fitted, nothing to say you have to use them.
Seeing many vehicles that have them but do not use them now, iirc VW can be easily turned off in the vehicle set up me use.

You may well be right, but you'd still be changing the D4 from the factory set UK Specification. So it would count as a modification for insurance companies. Thumbs Up

Of course the insurers may not care, but you'd still have to inform them.

Don't know how similar they are to the XC90 I had a few years ago - but I asked the stealer to program them off. I them informed my insurers who couldn't have cared less.
The interesting thing I later learnt was that...... The dealer's "programming" them to switch off actually meant pulling the fuse out!

So - if the D4 has a dedicated fuse for DRLs you could simply replace it with a blown one. No modifications and no insurance notifications.....

DRL's are mandatory and should come on automatically without interference of the driver until another light source is selected ...I think having them switched off would be considered an interference.

You won't fail an mot and I'm not sure plod will care much ...but as LT has pointed out you may fall foul of your insurers especially if they were found to have been switched off if you had a prang.

Not quite, because it would fall foul of this paragraph of Schedule 3 of the Road Vehicles Lighting Regulations 1989...

Quote:
3. The electrical connections to the obligatory dim-dip device or running lamps, as the case may be, shall be such that the light output specified in paragraph 1 or 2 above is emitted automatically whenever–

(a)the engine of the vehicle is running, or the key or devices which control the starting or stopping of the engine are in the normal position for driving the vehicle, and

(i)the obligatory position lamps, but not the headlamps, of the vehicle are switched on, or

(ii)the obligatory position lamps are switched off.

...and in doing so, could not be regarded as complying with paragraph 23:

Quote:
Maintenance of lamps, reflectors, rear markings and devices

23.—(1) No person shall use, or cause or permit to be used, on a road a vehicle unless every lamp, reflector, rear marking and device to which this paragraph applies is in good working order and, in the case of a lamp, clean.

Thumbs Up

The above theory also applies to the TPMS from MY14 D4 models onward.

Just out of interest, why do you want to switch them off anyway?

I think you will find that DRL's are not mandatory on the D4, as the vehicle was type approved prior to 2011.

They can, indeed, be turned off (and back on again) by the user. The owner's manual gives the details...at least for 2016 MY vehicles
