Swollen nuts - does anyone have a cure? |
|
So, I have a bad case of swollen nuts
I carry a 23mm socket and a breaker bar in the boot with me and admittedly it does a fine job of removing them, but I thought I'd treat the old girl to a new, clean and shiny set of nuts.
I'm loathed to buy the poor quality genuine ones because the same will happen again. Having searched on the forum, it appears that the solid ones rust after a while.
So my question is, has anyone purchased a set of silver nuts that they have had for a few years, still look good, function well but do not cost the earth? Kev

I found a long soak in a cold bath helps.. Followed by plenty of ice packs and compression! 👍
(sorry couldn't resist 😜)

Found mine had swollen just before a trip to France this summer.
Had to use a 24mm socket to get one off.
I bit the bullet and bought a set of solid stainless nuts from Wrington - www.wrington.co.uk
Price made my eyes water as much as the swollen nuts did!
But they are quality looking and feeling items.
Cheers

If money were no object Mark, I'd get a set of Wrington's. Unfortunately though, at the moment, I can't think of a way to get the price tag past the boss
My life wouldn't be worth living if she found out I had spent £220 on a set of wheel nuts Kev

I bought a set from AF - can’t remember exact cost but it was nowhere near £220 - think it was less than £50 - bought about 4 years ago and when I sold the D4 about 9 months ago, no rust at all. Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.

Thanks guys.
Moo, was it the Britpart ones you had to replace a couple of times? Was that because they swelled too? Kev

When I replaced mine I put oil down the centre to get between the stainless cap & the body of the nut. So far it has been OK and not swollen .

Original LR nuts swelled at about 120,000 so were changed. Britpart ones at about 210,000 so replaced with another set of Britpart.
The nuts are dirt cheap so I wouldn't over think it. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)

I have been told that swollen wheel nuts is due to pressure washing of the wheels. Can any one confirm that this is the case?

As far as I'm aware, it's not that the nuts are swelling.
They are twisting, and that's due to the constant tightening/removing over time.
But if I'm wrong, I do stand corrected. 🏴

My Old Bus was never washed and defiantly never pressure washed. I think it is to do with mixed metals. To be honest, replacement nuts are so cheap I don’t know why people worry. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
