There's a new SSM that mentions holding the lock & unlock buttons down for 15 seconds... maybe this is an override in the event of a 'lock error'

Had what sounds like same prob on my 55 reg a few months back. I dismantled the upper tailgate switch - the 'bendy' metal that makes the contact had all corroded, luckily was still just in warranty at the time and got a new unit swapped over.

I have a similar problem, holding down the lock and unlock has made no difference. The lock does appear to actuate (you can hear the solenoid) but the tailgate is firmly shut. Anybody any more ideas?

Using the instructions from other parts of this forum I managed to take the tailgate trim off. I then spent 2 hours removing the skin from the back of my hand, I then persuaded my 6 year old son to do the same. Neither of us managed to open the tailgate. My girlfriend spent 10 mins and it popped open. It was then failrly easy to do the rest of the job, the problem was that the end of the cable had broken off and appear to be made of solder, which appears to be totally inadequate for the job. I put a blob of weld on the end instead and put it all back together. Total Cost £0 and 2 hands without skin, which are now healing. I recommend that if you have an older D3 then you should look at the cable as it is a lot easier when you can open the upper tailgate!
