My tailgate just broke
I opened up the upper tailgate, and there was a loud crack, and the top mounting for the right hand gas strut has pulled out of the bodywork .
This was followed by the sound of all the bits falling down the inside of the rear wing.
Now the top tailgate won't stay open unless I prop it with the remains of the strut.
Easy to fix, just need to find someway of retrieveing the bits

is there a reason you don't want to have this repaired under warranty

It will have to be done under warranty, I thought if it was as simple as retrieving the nut, I would screw it back on myself, BUT it looks like the nut is a captive nut welded to the inner rear wing D post. No access is possible as far as I can see.
From what I can see, the welds have failed and the captive nut has broken out of its frame and gone.
I will have to speak to the dealer next time I am home.

Oh dear I reckon its a good job I'm going on holiday for two weeks at easter, they can look after it for me, and fix the parking brake brake while their at it.
Gareth - exactly the same happened to my 2004/5 HSE 2 wweks ago - required 2 days in the garage as it had to go to the body shop to recover the captive nut that was "uncaptive" & rattling around in the bodywork - seems that we have found another design fault in the D3

Cheers Ecosse, yes it does seem to be a developing problem. I have put a separate post up to ask everyone to go and check, it could save a lot of hassle.
I like the term "Torque Relaxation" used in the TSB. Thats tech speak for fell off.

Car booked in for repair, also going to try again to fix the screeching park brake (which I managed to demonstrate adequately to the entire staff of Guy Salmon)
GS have agreed to have the car while I go on holiday, and deliver it back to my house before I return. So they have 2 weeks to do a good job.
Confirmed that a body shop visit is required. Strange thing is, they were very surprised when I showed them the broken strut, and told them how it happened. They had obviously not seen a broken mounting before mine. I was tempted to get them to check all the Disco's on the parking lot, but I had to get back to work.
Although on my inital quick look both sides appeared to be tight I discovered on closer inspection last night that the right hand one was a little loose, only took about ¾ of a turn to tighten it but I think an application of loctite is definitely in order at the weekend
Cheers for pointing this out Gareth, pity you have to suffer the full after effects of the issueThe End

Just went to look at my struts, following all the posts on this forum, and sure enough the right hand side is suffering from "torque relaxation" !
Called the dealer (Hillendale), who said they are not aware of any issues, but they will look at it for me if I drop in later.
Think I'll make sure they are aware of the problem, and check all D3's that come in...2005 Disco 3 TDV6 7 seater. Leather, DVD, fully colour-coded.
