If the latch needs replacement, how can you access it? Is it true that you either have to break the inner plastic or have lilliputian hands?

The emergency override process for the knacked tailgate switch is:
Press and hold both lock and unlock buttons on the dash for 3 seconds.........the top tailgate will pop open onto the first latch, get someone else to 'try' and open the tailgate at the sametime you press the dash buttons and the tailgate will open - chances are the switch mech is crudded up with corrosion. It can be cleaned up with a small screwdriver/scraper; lubed up, and normal service restored.
You can also programme the 'Landrover' button on the key fob to open the top tailgate........but I've not managed to do it yet Jim

So JimboD3, is there an emergency procedure to open the lower tailgate if it does not open otherwise?

Thanks Jim, the top tailgate does not open to the first latch when I try the emergency proceedure - do you know how to remove the trim from the inside of the top tailgate which will probably allow me to manually release it.

Both the upper and lower motorised latches are in the lower half; only the upper tailgate opening switch is located in the handle on the upper half. Dr. Ian Malcolm:

Transgenic tomato anyone?

Mine packed up the other day, not the most technical fix but I gave the handle containing the switch a few heavy thumps with the back of my fist
Worked fine ever since 2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto

EIG, thankfully haven't yet had to do it myself, but a quick search turned up this :
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post398013.html#398013
and as a cross reference so you know what's where:
http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/post409618.html#409618
The second to last picture shows the second skin you'll need to get under to reach the mechanism. I haven't managed to find a photo of that; sorry!
Edit: I thought there was a photo guide to fixing this, but I have a fever and the google is no longer strong with me Dr. Ian Malcolm:
