Tailgate strut bodywork damage

My HSE was one of the earliest ones to develop the tailgate strut issue - snapped the mount completely & 3 days in the workshop to repair it. However I have now noticed - on washing the car for the first time in ages (the garage keeps washing it on its frequent visits for repairs Wink ) - that at the top of the rear panel there is a circular surface cracking of the paintwork. Worryingly it is exactly on the outside of the point where the strut mount is - may be jumping the gun but I suspect that the repair to the strut mount must be the source of this, perhaps an overtighened/overlong bolt that is pressing agaist the inside of the panel? Has anyone else noticed this having had the repair done?

they didnt have to weld a plate in as part of the repair did they?

Heat can cause paint crazing

Thanks folks - yes the bolt mount had actually snapped so I wouldn't be surprised if it was a weld job! Back to the garage for another warranty claim Twisted Evil

Hi Ecosse, mine was repaired back in May, and there is no damage apparent on the outside of the panel. Any chance you can post a photo?

There is some distortion around where the mounting is screwed in, and it does flex a lot when the tailgate is moved. I have also had to nip it up again recently.

I am keeping a very close eye on it.

First attempt at photos not too good Confused - too much reflection off the paintwork! Garage had same problem - but confirm what they reckon is that when the bodyshop repaired the broken strut (it snapped completely) they woudl have welded it back on & there must have been too much heat in the weld Twisted Evil Certainly a good idea to get the struts checked/replaced in advance to avoid them actually failing & necessitating a weld.
