Hi ridgeback_moor,
Yes I did the job myself and fitted new idler pulleys and tensioner at the same time. the job is not hard but you need to be sure of every step particularly when setting up the timing. I didn't replace the seals for the cover though
You will need a set of instructions from the landrover GTR website, a set of timing belt tools ( cost me $90 AUD) and patience as the starter motor removal and replacement tests the temper. otherwise if you follow the steps it is quite achievable.
I haven't put the pics here as they would take up a lot of space however if you go to my gallery they are there. I hope they will help as it is not the best of picture stories.

Hi,
What kind of prices have people been quoted to change the belts in the UK please?
I've been quoted £300 all in by my local independant LR garage, including the fuel pump belt, so that's who I'm getting to do the work.Previously:

Given that its an 8-10 hour job, and the parts are about £100 then that sounds cheap even at £50 per hour. Make sure they are quoting for both front and back belts. As others have said the front one is "easy", but the back one is hard task especially if things don't quite go right. The dealer I used for mine asked me to book in for two days and told me they can just about do it in one if everything goes smoothly, but one bolt refuses and they "like the comfort of the second day". They needed the second day for mine. But in part that might have been laying hands on the EPB, which is now silent (until the next time.......)Rob Smith
Silver rools OK
Yes, the quote of £300 includes the cam belt, tensioner, and rear fuel belt, labour and VAT, but the front aux belt will be extra as that wasn't included in the original quote (about £30 for that I think). The garage have done a few before, and they have their own D3, so he's more than aware that the back belt can be a pig of a job.
This is just for the belts, not including the rest of the service.

Timing belt job is 3.5-4 hours. Its worth making sure the 2 idler (or deflection) pulleys on the front "cam" belt are changed. Only £15 each but have to be ordered seperatly from belt kit.
I was wondering whether to get them to change the idler pulleys - I know it makes sense at 15 quid each, but it doesn't mention changing them on the LR tech sheet? Are they prone to failure?Previously:

At that money I wouldn't take the risk - if they do fail ... it would be tears at best!Regards,

I do alot of timing belts and change idlers every time. The ones i took of my d3 felt ok but i wouldnt trust them for another 105k, they both had grease marks on the back.
Landrover told me they dont change them which i think is idiotic for the price of them compared to the damage if they fail.
Do you have the part number for the idler pulley by any chance?

Who takes 8-10 hours? Book time is around 4 hours and that's all they can charge unless the find other work after the strip down. If they break anything doing the job, both parts and labour are down to the garage.Faultmate MSV2 EXTREME
