Sounds like the crank has let go, if it has its likely the block is done for too. Sorry for your woes. yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

But the crank turns from the starter so cant be snapped I don't think, by let go do you mean spun shells and knackered anyway even if not snapped.

If its turning at the front then as you say it should be OK. Normally a broken crank buckles the block so that the main bearings become misaligned. So it may be you have a top end issue with either the chains assuming the main belt and oil pump are OK.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I have seen a truck engine with a snapped crank still running.
Im sure DM has posted up pics here of the same with either a 2.7 or the 3.0?

Indeed, and I agree with you regarding a broken crank. I just didn't want to burst all his balloons at once and perhaps leave a little bit of hope in there yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Sorry to go quiet, been very busy on the farm so the rebuild was put on hold.
UPDATE:
Took the engine apart and upon removing the sump quickly realised that this engine was scrap! Never seen such a mess of conrods/shells/ etc lying on the bottom of a sump. Bloody nightmare!
So sourced another engine that was still running but knocking. Stripped this and spun on no.1 and 3 so taken crank for a regrind only to be told that crank failed the crack test! So far this has been a very painful process but I am going to complete this!
Any advice would be appreciated now, I've got a 2.7 crank in good condition, is this the same as 3.0 crank and could it be used as a replacement?
If not any advice on sourcing a new crank?
Are the any particular shells/upgraded shells that I should use for big ends and mains?
Thanks!

considering 2.7 has a stroke of 88mm and 3.0 has 90mm than no, they aren't interchangeable

are you sure "completing this" is the most cost effective option ?

This engine is obviously no longer viable. You're best option is to get hold of a "known to be good" used replacement. Either a D3 or Jaguar S Type and fit the complete unit rather than pfaffing around with bits and swaps. It will be more cost effective, and reduce the risk of further catastrophic damage. Budget for new belts, oil pump and water pump.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

Ive seen disco 3 crank for 2.7 with 90mm stroke though?
Sources second engine for 500 so as long as I keep build under 3.5k then I have a very cheap car.
The second engine I have is fine other than needing a crank so I think finding a crank for it is the better option. Who knows what you’re getting for a known to be good engine plus never seen one for under 3.5k!
All depends on getting a crank though

In theory that might sound plausible, but in practice can be far from it. If the block is warped from the stress during the failure your efforts and expense will have been for nothing.yµ (idµ - eAµ) ψ=mψ

I’m sure cranks cost £3000+
Sound bonkers.

Yes that’s true, although I’m hoping that considering engine was running but just knocking that it will have been caught early enough before anything too serious. Will just have to see I guess!

Cranks with matching shells are readily available. Just whether or not you want to use them...My D3 Build Thread
