But If you go on Castrol website it recommends Edge Turbo Diesel 0/30 over the Magnatec 5/30 - so I bought some for top-up - should I trash it or use it?

Hi Nigel,

As I said, Edge 0w30 is perfectly suitable & probably the better of the two oils, BUT as it is not 5w30, it is not recommended by Landrover.

I find that some French Hypermarkets sell Mobil 1 for about 2/3rds the UK retail price.

Don't know much about oil types but this thread prompted me to look at my last service invoice from Stratstone, this shows the oil type used to be "semi-synthetic". No other details. Wot's semi-synthetic, is this OK?

Hi Tony,

Semi synthetic can still meet the requirement perfectly well, it's just it is derived from a normal mineral oil with sythetic additives added. full synthetic has a synthetic base instead, thus is usually more expensive & should be better quality.

My own personal feeling is all the manufacturers strive for longer service intervals, & oil companies try to keep up. The oil has to hold the contaminates & stay in grade for longer, the critical bit is just before the oil change, due to the oil being worn out & having the highest amount of carbon to carry round. If you plan to keep a Disco for a long time I feel it pays to change the oil between the 15000 service.

Assuming it was filled with 5W30 when it was serviced, which may be fully or semi synthetic, does it matter if you top it up with synthetic 0W30 - do they mix OK?

according to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Motor_oil#Grades

The number before the W indicates the ability to crank the engine at a low temperature, the lower the number, the lower the ambient temperature at which the engine can be cranked. I assume that the lower this number, the better (engine wear, fuel consumption) for cold starts. The number after the W is a measure of the viscocity at 100 deg C.

So a 0W30 oils will have the same viscosity at 100 deg C as a 5W30 at 100 deg C, but will start better in the cold.
I dont see any problem using a 0W30 oil.

Generally I wouldnt want to mix different oils with different additives as the effects are unknown

I wouldnt use 15W40 in the TDV6 unless I had an old engine running in a hot climate.

What are the thoughts about using a 0W-40 synthetic oil such as Mobil 1 Supersyn 0W-40 which is a fully synthetic ACEA A3/B3/B4 oil?

Hi All,
The number below the 'W' is an indication of it's viscosity at a given low temperature, thus a 0w30 is thinner, at say 0 degrees than a 5w30.
It can crank better because it's thinner! this is not necessarily better, depending on the design of the engine.
When fuel saving oils came out (mainly becuase of the ford spec) they found that if they were used in engines not designed for them, the piston rings would score the bores slightly due to the thinner viscosity & cause increased oil consumption. I am talking about using it in, say an older Ford escort, or Sierra, or similar.

While the TDV6 has been designed for fuel saving (believe it or not!) it still has a recommended spec for oil, which is 5w30. 0w30 is virtually identical, but is thinner when cold, 0w40 is both thinner when cold & thicker when hot. With different grades, you are moving away from the designed spec.

As for the question of synthetic top up, I have never heard of different additives having an adverse affect, but it is best to stick with the same oil. Always ask your Garage what make & grade oil they are using.

Regards
Steve

Mobil 1 is regarded as an excellent synthetic oil and one that I have been using for years.
Very likely an unnecessary expense but as I work my engine hard for sustained periods towing its worth it to know I am using something as temperature stable as it gets.

As regards the viscosity range.
First its best to appreciate that multigrade oils are inherently a thin oil with long chain additives to give it better high temperature stiffness. As those additives break up under the endless shearing that occurs in use that higher viscosity progressively drops. Ever noticed how new oil quietens your engine? Well that's because straight out of the can its in grade.
As Mobil 1 is a premium oil you ought expect that those long chain molecule additives are as good as money can buy. This ability to hold viscosity is a major failing of budget oils. [ Use cheap oil then change it early is good advice]

The 0W is nothing but a bonus in those critical seconds after starting as it supports oil distribution. Just keep the load down for literally a minute or two from cold as the film strength builds.
The 40 is higher than LR specify but you know the grade will drop not increase during the oils life.
Also I believe in applications where the engine is on sustained higher load, such as my towing, that retaining viscosity is important and a 40 at 15k miles is likely to be better then than a 30.

Anyway thats my take on it.

Just bought some Castrol Magnatec 5w30 to A1/B1 spec.

After checking with my dealer, this is the oil they use, so I'm keeping it the same.

Thumbs Up

Castrol Magnetec 5w30 A1 is a full synthetic, not semi.

here is the FAQ direct from Castrols website:

Will Castrol Magnatec mix with the oil I am currently using?
Castrol Magnatec is specially designed to mix completely with other synthetic, part synthetic or mineral lubricants. Not only is it OK to top up with Castrol Magnatec but you will begin to benefit straight away from the active and continuous protection from it’s Intelligent Molecules, reducing engine wear caused by inferior oils.

Is Castrol Magnatec OK for diesel cars?
All grades of Castrol Magnatec are also qualified for diesel as well as petrol cars, however to get the most from your diesel car you should rely on the dedicated diesel technology in Magnatec Diesel.
Find your nearest stockist

Is it Castrol Magnatec Synthetic or Semi Synthetic?
Castrol Magnatec 5W-30A1 is a fully synthetic formulation for improved performance in extreme cold temperatures.
Magnatec 10W-40 and 15W-40 are both part synthetic. All grades of Magnatec contain Intelligent Molecules for active and continuous protection.

Simon - see my post of yesterday - that's what mine use.
Suggest you call your dealer and ask what they use - just in case different dealers use different grades
