Telegraph long term review of D5

I'm speechless Shocked

Quote:
Our new Discovery is still at the garage, writes Ed Wiseman. Considering this is a brand new example of the most advanced 4x4 on the market, we're not impressed with the fact it's been out-of-action for a month. Granted, more complex cars tend to have more problems, but not to this extent and not at this stage of ownership.

Here is a journalist trying to give the car a brilliant review and the car/garage is doing its best to stop her. Surely the garage should have given them a like for like replacement if they realised she is doing a motor review?

It’s interesting that the Telegraph is the only D5 long term test I can find so far (happy to be proved wrong). But there’s no Autocar, Times, Top Gear, Car Magazine, etc etc that have taken on a new Discovery as a long term test. And I have been wondering why.

Just read the whole article. That's a PR disaster in the making!

PR disaster indeed!

When first looking to replace the D3, the D5 was top of the list as it seemed the only new alternative that would do everythign the D3 does and more. Having read this and seen other issues reported, SWMBO and I have been looking at alternatives and it's now far less likely that our replacement for the D3 will be a D5 (or even another Land Rover). A D5 would be at the top of my budget so do not wan't to spend that kind of money with any questions over reliability. Had there been no significant reports regarding reliability we probably wouldn't have even looked elsewhere.

LR not doing themselves much good here, went on to read the full review, not impressed, not in the market but interested in case I might be at a later date, after reading the D5 review I read the PHEV Outlander review, not without its problems either, looks like the technology for new cars is away ahead of the guys that are supposed to be able to fix things, maybe they’ll catch up but as some D5 owners have reported it’s not just technology issues it’s simple things as well that seem to be lacking attention but not the case when it comes to asking for your hard earned money!

It's not just the D5 that has problems.

Bloody Land Rovers and their bloody electrical/software problems. A family next to us in Cornwall last week had to get up at 6am and drive to Truro to pick up a replacement hire car for their two-year-old Discovery which was malfunctioning all over the place. As did our new one.

That two year old Disco would be a D4, wouldn't it?

No doubt the whole thing is a PR disaster for LR. I doubt they care though.

Also read the Outlander review as that has now been added to my shortlist. They do score highly on the What Car reliability review though

Looks like one of the very first, most D5s are 17 plates onwards. I’m lucky most of my issues have been build quality.

Those issues though are pretty common amongst D5s, a few owners have suffered at least one of them. The gearbox one is cured, apparently, by a software update which that car should’ve had.

There have been updates to the infotainment system as well, you think LR would be on top of this as it is a review car.

They are useless!! Big Cry

I think this illustrates JLR's attitude to customers.

Someday soon it will come home to roost - you can't supply unreliable products and treat your customers with such disdain in the long term.

I have owned Land Rovers continuously since my first 2 door RR with no PAS in the early 1970's.

I doubt I will buy a JLR product to replace my 2016 D4 Landmark.

Agree NJSS ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ Bow down

So do a lot of owners I know accross LR forums Sad

It doesn't take a genius to work out if a motoring journalist is testing your vehicle you check it with a fine tooth comb and if it breaks down you fix it overnight or replace it with another - a month fixing it is just ridiculous Banging Head

I used to work for Local Government but now run my own business - no prizes for guessing which sector LRs attitude reflects Rolling Eyes

I hate having to read this type of thing but I do find it worrying, generically, also.

I'm the flip-side and know the 'good' and 'bad' stuff going on, as do a few other forum members.

I'm likely to be getting one as a company car (my next but one car though as already in pipeline for others) as I was so impressed by D5's I've driven.

I think fact I'm forgoing 4.4d Autobiography RRS and/or F-PACE supercharged could be perceived as 'backward' (for RRS) or odd (for reduced power for both) move but I loved my D3's (private and company cars) and D4's (company cars) and, as I said, my early experiences of D5 took that further for me still.

I hope things improve (whether its actual issues or perceived and 'don't likes', etc.) as very important model in the product portfolio

I hate reading them too astonbuilder Sad

I have visited Gaydon many times and felt enormous pride in what I saw - I've also been to many new LR launches including the D3 at NEC and RRS supercharged at Gaydon - I was like a dog with 2 tails Mr. Green

I just don't understand the current attitude and I'm talking from experience plus what I read Banging Head
