Temporarily blinded when hitting roadside water
Hi everybody
Not posted much due to my 09 SE being trouble free so far (10K), Best vehicle i have owned by far
Just one fault to date, which I have never noticed with any other vehicle I have owned
When driving ,in the dark particularly and hitting unseen roadside puddles, the water seems to come straight over the windscreen , temporarily blinding me until the wipers do there stuff. This is quite dangerous on unfamiliar roads as the natural reaction is to brake until vision is restored
Ive tried driving through a few puddles at varying speed and it seems the water is forced forwards before being blown back over the screen
Presumably i am not alone with this issue?
Is there any mod that can be carried out to remedy this , ie mudflaps, deflectors etc or is it just something to live with ?
Thanks

With wipers set to 'auto' I've never found this to be an issue, but it certainly does get a lot of water on the screen through many types of puddles and at a variety of speeds.
I think this is particularly more noticeable on road-biased tyres (Scorpions/Wranglers etc) as I have recently moved to AT2 rubber which doesn't cause so much of a tidal wave
Advice would be: wipers to auto and live with it. The older I get, the more I realise that people confuse wrinkles for wisdom

Any 4x4 with decent approach angles and a moderately wide tyre will suffer from this. Our L200 was as bad or worse. Surprisingly our 90 doesn't do this, although this may be due to narrower tyres with a more open tread? Perhaps those with MTRs fitted can comment on whether they still have the problem?
As regards mods, there was some discussion last year that it may be possible to fit a small rubber flap forward of the front wheel to reduce the impact, but I'm not aware of anyone having actually done this.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

This happens on every 4x4 I have driven, as no dosh says it is probably because of the approach angle and wide tyres. I think its actually fairly spectacular and cool once you get used to it. Not that I would purposely aim for puddles on the road

You can go through water much faster before it blinds you when you're running MTR's When I changed mine (what seems life a lifetime ago) I noticed an immediate improvement. Seems as though the thick tread pattern cuts through the water as opposed to pushing the water forwards (and up onto your windscreen.Bodsys Brake Bible

I see it as my civic duty to clear the road of puddles for other motorists not fortunate enough to own a car with such good traction.
Might start the '4x4s contribution to road safety campaign'

Just tested my ST's not 5 minutes ago (much to the shock of a pedestrian who I saw visibly step back as I accelerated into the local sheep dip under a railway bridge) and usual swimming pool of water over the car - I tend to put the wipers on permanently if I do this as the autowipers can take a few seconds to respond and leave you with that 'oh good god I can't see' feeling Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
Nah, I've put a hole through the floor so it pours out quicker than it floods in. Barely notice it now [looks around for snorkel emoticon]I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Yep....mine does it a lot less with AT2's fitted, but it still throws up a serious amount of water. The original Pirelli's were much much worse.
I think the RRS has the little deflector flaps in front of each front wheel to reduce this effect and for some reason I seem to remember seeing a LR D3 mule (maybe the 5.0 V8 one at the Ring) with something similar fitted on one of the spy photos somewhere.2006 Discovery 3 TDV6 SE AutoBuckingham Blue 2007 Golf GT DSG

It's better with MTRs on, but doesn't grant immunity. We have a low spot in our driveway that fills after rainstorms up to a foot deep. Depending on my mood (and therefore speed), the water either splashes to the side or over the hood (sorry, bonnet ).

Thanks Guys
I think Im just going to have to wait for my tyres to wear out!!
I also agree that the delay in auto wipe doesnt help
One plus point the ,kids love it & encourage as much puddle emptying as possible!!

Open the nearside passenger window as you drive through
