That's a first for us

In all the years and hundreds of TDV6 engines we've stripped down, this is the first time we've ever come across studs being used instead of bolts. Shocked

Is it any wonder the main bearing caps were flopping around in the block, allowing all the bearings to spin.

to post liberally across t'internet ? Laughing

my thoughts are that if done properly, it needn't be a problem ... but it's undoubtedly a sign of a shortcut being taken rather than wait for proper parts to turn up. Wonder what else "might as well use these I have to hand" decisions were made ?

What locates the main bearing caps normally then? Shoulder bolts?

The main caps are an interference fit in the block with 4x main stretch bolts and 2x side bolts per cap. If the caps are loose, they can twist or move side-to-side.
