Not long had my D3. It’s got 185,000 miles on the clock and is running pretty well currently. I cleaned the injection system through with thinners in the tank.
Thinking of giving it an oil and filter change. 5w30 is the brew recommended but I was wondering if with summer coming and the mileage being high ish if it might be ok to stick a slightly thicker oil into the car? Is there any precedent for this? Not thinking of going daft but perhaps one grade thicker? The car will be doing regular 200 mile each wat weekend trips on the motorway as well as it’s dog walking duties. Discovery 3 tdv6 HSE 2007

You put paint thinners in the tank ?
Using thicker oil is not recommended, I personally wouldn't do it. it will increase drag on rotating components, increase fuel consumption, and may even make bearing shell rotation more likely. These engines do not need any encouragement. D3 owned from new, P017 brake recall, BAS FBHIC, new FBH, LR013487 oil pump, new water pump. RRS front lower suspension arms. New suspension compressor/ relay. New Denso alternator. CuNifer rear brake pipes. New GKN rear propshaft. New HPFP belt & tensioner. New A/C Condenser.NO WARRANTY for many many years.

Not just paint thinners the cheap gun cleaning thinners? Full of tulle new and xylene....
Had no,two stroke oil so I used a drop of Castrol r oil too to help the fuel pump, stay lubricated. I have used thinners for years on injection engines. In a petrol the thinners is actually higher Ron and cheaper than petrol....used to make my old Saab turbos fly, more boost possible before pinking.
It’s a cure all I use when a petrol injection engine is lumpy or hunting. Used it to pass the emissions test a few times too.
In a diesel a half litre in half a tank usually gives the injectors a good clean. A sort of cure all and cheaper than replacing injectors. I wouldn’t use it on a new or warranted engine but when they get a few miles on them it’s a risk and reward/ cost choice. So far so good. Twenty years or more I been using it and yet to harm one yet. Mine is on roughly the same mileage as yours and I use standard 5w30 with no issues (touch wood!) the trick is to do Regular oil changes... I do mine roughly every 3-6 months and only do a few thousand miles a year in it. Trust me,your engine will thank you for it.
Good luck and hope you enjoy it 👍

Cool, it can just get fresh standard oil and a new filter. It’s cheap oil which is good if they like it changing regularly. Discovery 3 tdv6 HSE 2007
