In 2024, the annualised inflation rate for the UK, measured by the Consumer Prices Index (CPI), was 2.5%. This figure refers to the increase in consumer prices over a 12-month period ending in December 2024. It's predicted to rise to 3.2% for 2025.
In other words the rise in VED is way above inflation.
My Toyota 2012 iQ has been £0 to tax since I've owned it (I think), next month it's going to cost me £20 for the year. Which is immaterial, but had it previously been £0.01, that's an increase of 2,000. 2006 D3 HSE (Original & still the best)-GONE

1.5 diesel engine in an MPV (the generic Stellantis group range of vans and MPV's) is £190, the 'same' vehicle in the generic van format is £335 'because it's a commercial vehicle'
Old older variants the MPV version can be as low as £30.....
My 55 plate Mercedes CLK350 has just come in at £430 on renewal

Last year my VED was £395 for my MY14 D4.
A few months back when I heard rates would yet again be going up from 1st April (no surprise there then), I checked what the new rate would be for 213G/KM Co2 and it was £415 (5% increase).
Wasn’t too happy, “but it is what it is” was my reckoning.
However, just received my V11 reminder and the cost of renewal has jumped to £430 (a £35, 9% jump).
Totally p!ssed off at this incompetent, money grabbing, Government treating me as a cash cow! £

Well, just paid up the £430 for my VED and never in all my years of taxing a car have I begrudged paying this so much.
If I could see the benefit to our roads, I would've been more accepting.
But the thought that instead, this inept Government will be using my money to pay the extortionate hotel bills for illegal immigrants really does me off ! ...... always on the road less travelled 🚧
