I think I’ve broken it 2009 D3 manual 170k miles
Had it about 3 months and been working through some service- preventative maintenance jobs. Latest one was, timing belts, timing chains and oil pump as the oil light was taking an age to go off in a mornin and the chains were rattling badly.
I’ve done everything but when I started it up 1st time it was running rough, before I could investigate I discovered a big oil leak at the back of the engine. I’dtrapped the o rin on the vacuum pump.
New o ring ring fitted and oil leak sorted, but still running rough, sounds like it’s down a cylinder, had a look at adaptation values with iid tool and cylinder 3 was 1400 all the others were between 600-700. So ordered a rebuilt injector, thinking I’d got some dirt in it.
Fitted that today fired up and all seemed good running very smooth with no obvious misfire, put everything back in restarted it and back to square 1 running very rough. Went up the street and loads of white smoke, the longer I drove the worse it got.
Rechecked the adaptations and exactly the same injector 3 1400 - 1370 all the rest 600-700.
Other than the roughness there are no mechanical noises and the oil light goes off instantly, no faults or fault codes though which is a worry.
I marked the cams with a paint pen as a double check and they all lined up exactly the same and the timing pins lined up perfectly.
I’m wondering if I could have bent a valve on number 3 cylinder some how, going to check the wiring to number 3 injector tomorrow as the loom did get pulled about a fair bit.
Has anyone got any other ideas, I do have an iid tool.

Did you number the injectors and put them back in the same place.
If you have bent a valve you usually get a fault code. Ie the injectors are at maximum offset

Did someone on here not suggest that when the figures are out for one of the injectors, it is an indication that the one before it in the sequence needs changing, rather than the one that is giving the anomalous figure?Previously:

I think my recollection was in regard to this thread: https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/need-replac...02536.html. In that one it was suggested that a low figure was being caused by the ECM adjusting for a higher figure from the previous injector in the sequence, which I guess is a bit different to Triumphman's situation of a single high figure on one injector.Previously:

Got a fault code this morning , cylinder 4 contribution - balance. That ties in with the above if I’m correct that cylinder 4 is the 2nd cylinder on the drivers side, I changed injector 3 which is cylinder 5 the rear cylinder on the drivers side, I think 🤔🤔

Changed cylinder 4 injector left bank front, no difference the injector was covered in carbon though which is strange as it’s hardly been run.

Pursuing injector codes seems to be a bit of a dark art!
For what its worth, my injector codes disappeared last year after using an in-tank EGR cleaner and an EGR cleaner spray in the air intake pipe (after the air filter) and haven't re-appeared in the subsequent 20,000 miles. I also run with a (roughly) 1:200 two-stroke oil mix at each fill of diesel in the (perhaps mistaken) belief that this helps it all burn a bit cleaner.Previously:

Yeah wynns cleaner seams effective.
2 stroke oil if you get it fixed, makes it sound quieter and lubricates the parts others can not reach
If you think a valve is bent, try and do a compression test through injector hole.
A leak off test is easy to try

I think the injector values may be a red herring or a symptom of something else, I’ve got an injector adapter for a compression test coming hopefully.
The symptoms are it starts instantly with no chain rattle and runs smooth for 20 or 30 seconds it then gets progressively more lumpy the longer it runs. I’m now getting a fault code P0272-00 cylinder 4 contribution / ballance.
I’m wondering if I’ve dropped something down the inlet or even left a rag in the inlet somewhere or if not that a wiring fault.
I’ve renewed one injector then swapped the one I removed in to another cylinder a couple of times but nothing changes so I’m pretty sure it’s not the actual injectors.
Today’s job is take the inlet pipe work off and have a ferret about with an endoscope then start testing the loom.

when I had a leaking valve, one cylinder was at maximum adjustment, another at minimum adjustment. (fault codes present saying this)

If you've dropped something in (damaged a valve or something else) it won't run smooth for 20 seconds. If there is mechanical damage, it'll be there from the start. Most likely fuel control/sensor/injector issueRichard

That’s my thoughts other than a rag down the inlet somewhere gunna check that 1st then start going through the wiring - connectors.

Well I’ve found it, I’ve been away with the motor home for a few weeks so I just left it until I got back. I have done a compression test today and all are showing 380psi except cylinder 3 which is a big fat zero so it looks like I’ve dropped something down the inlet tract. Next job is to find out how much damage I’ve done 😭
