Thinking of selling up?

Toying with the idea of selling our disco 3 which has been great and if I'm honest I also love it.

It's a 54 se in black, 133,000 and had £3500 spent on it at 131,000.

We looked for ages to find one with heated leather, sunroof for the kids and a manual gearbox.. But I'm just waiting for something to go wrong with it and the horror stories of the body having to come off is really starting to worry me.
Every thing works, handbrake, suspension but I also can't get around how poor they are on fuel? I mean it's the same on fuel as my m3? If we put £50 in we get around 250 miles just maybe less?

We did buy a disco to tow a caravan and to be safe for the kids and after towing diggers in the past I know you need the weight in the vehicle so I new it was the best vehicle for us.

Suppose I'm just worried that either the handbrake will fail, (£600) the suspension will start playing up or all of the other little niggles, was looking at tiguans or going back to a bmw 3 series m sport as that's what we had before.

They are a great truck and I love driving it but I think they maybe a bit high maintenance for us, thing is all the important bits like the wishbones, cambelt, four new tyres wi an alignment have been done, even the handbrake was done in the last two years, unsure what to do really?

Sounds as if it has had a lot done to it so it should be ok for a few years just find a good indie or someone you know that knows these and have it serviced regular the hand brake does not give much trouble if it is adjusted/serviced regularly Thumbs Up

I'd keep it. Whats to say the next cat won't cost you? Now you've spent this money on it, why let someone else have the benefit?

That's another thing, I have found a very good Indi, steve reeks and he gave it the thumbs it Very Happy

Just surprised they are not a bit better on fuel but then it is 2.5 tonne and a 2.7 v6 I suppose!

Another thing with ours when we first had, the turbo wasn't working below 3000rpm which turned out to be the actuator arm and when freed and graphite greased she did go quite well, but lately it's pulling very hard, a lady owned it for years previously, (only had 2 previous owners) so I guess she tootled about in it? Plus it had been sitting for a month before we bought it, I've done my best to free it up 8)

Also I've just been waiting for it to go wrong and bless it's socks it hasn't so I would feel bad selling it!

Ideally I'd love it to do 40mpg and not have scary stories of the body coming off to replace turbo/air con unit etc?, just think a simple 2.0 vw Tiguan won't bite me on the ass, but then I know I could drive over the Tiguan in the disco Very Happy

Like your thinking! And to be fair we didn't spend the £3500 that's it's just had, would hate to buy another knowing what I know now

Every make of car has their pitfalls, it sounds to me like your D3 had had most of them fixed,so run it until something expensive starts to play up like the gearbox etc.

I think one of the things that hasnt really changed in the whole life span of landrovers and where they are different to most other car makes is, when you replace something ie a wheel bearing theres a good chance if you keep it long enough you will have to replace it again!

VAG cars are good but nowadays no better than any other marque.

So you've given it 4 months and it's not let you down, what's not to like?

If you'd really looked into owning this then I'm positive mpg didn't really matter in the first place as it sounds like it ticked every box you were after.

Will it be a case of in another 4 months time VW Tiguan or whatever you go for will be getting a for sale sign on it?
As as for 3 series, how safe do you want your kids to be when travelling?

Your choice to make, not mine Thumbs Up

Them along with modern bmw have become some of the worst. Modern stuff is just throw away junk imo.

Yes your right, the mpg is not the be all and end all as it's not a work vehichle, it's the wifes and she just potters about in it
Another thing is it's still quite an old car on a 54 reg whereas i can buy a 2010 equivalent for roughly the same money?

It is perfect for the kids but think sometimes it's overkill as we may not get a caravan now, i'm not dead set on it going, will be going up on the ramps this week at my pals garage so we can see what the underneaths like as the mot is up in november.

I have both a VW Tiguan and a D3. They are incomparable and fulfil completely different roles. Notwithstanding the D3 fuel economy, I chose to drive the D3 every time over the Tiguan. You will be disappointed in how much less space there is in the Tiguan.

I'd look at the cam belt tensioner too if that's not been changed with cam belts. It's worth replacing on a old car.

It's more wife really but she's also looking at the small things like road tax which on an lci 2010 bmw 3 series is £30 a year, plus 50mpg

And yes i totally understand that the d3 will be like a tardis compared to a tiguan but i do like the simplicity of them, i had a 58 plate golf gt tdi a few years back and it was a great little car, good on fuel and couldn't see any massive bills on the horizon.

Two of my best pals have the tiguan so will have a look
