Thoughts on a D4 warranty |

A month into D4 ownership and very happy so far.
Car is a 2013 HSE on 74000. Bought from a (reputable) non-specialist dealer with a 3 month warranty. Service history is complete, the first four completed on schedule with LR dealers or specialists, the subsequent 2 with non specialists and both a little late. Last serviced in December by the dealer prior to sale. No advisories on MOT.
My mechanic (non-specialist, though with several regular D4 customers) has checked the car and found nothing untoward.
Having read practically every page on this forum, I’m well aware of the potential for ‘issues’ this car presents. The question is whether I pay for further warranty. Due to the age and mileage I’m getting quotes of £80 + per month. Part of me thinks I’d be better off putting some money aside each month instead, and possibly getting a full specialist service done soon to address anything that hasn’t been done by this stage.
Thoughts anybody???

It's a gamble, like any non-compulsory insurance. Yes you could put the money in the bank and keep it for that rainy day, depends when that rainy day comes.
Personally I decided to have a warranty, in the last 2 years of ownership I have had issues to be resolved courtesy of the warranty. In both cases, if I had to pay the bill of the fix, it would have cost me more than the warranty cost for the year, by some margin (50% more - roughly) so I've been squids in, to the point that if I don't have to make a claim in this third year, I roughly break even. Gives me peace of mind.
But that's the gamble, everyone and everyone's vehicle is different. MY2012 D4 HSE Nara Bronze with some extra stuff

+1 for LaserTam. Same experience for me. Warranty Direct have been excellent with me - but I know that others on here have had issues.

Whatever you do, make sure that your late services won’t have already voided any potential claim, rendering the policy a complete waste of money. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

.......and don't bother if wear and tear isn't included.
A cheaper halfway house is the AA breakdown cover, will pay out up to £500 with small excess, will take the sting out of most common things like compressors. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Unless you have a spare £18k that you're willing to spend on the car should the crank shaft snap, I would strongly recommend a decent warranty that will cover it. As much as it's unlikely that it'll happen, it's a possibility and having been in that situation myself I wouldn't wish it on anyone.

Thanks all.
A conversation with warranty direct and a more reasonable quote - £550 for the year - makes me think I’ll go for it. They’re happy with the service history (main criteria is that it’s been serviced in the last 12 months; it was done in December), and the coverage is pretty thorough including wear and tear. Exclusions are suspension and air con - only increasing the premium quote significantly will get these covered.
Does that sound reasonable for a car of this mileage?

They exclude suspension cover for a reason, as it’s the one thing most likely to result in a claim. How much would it be to add it?
WD have been charging for pre contract inspections recently, is this still the case? With WD they have something known as a “betterment” clause; check their site for a full explanation. It’s the flip side to having wear and tear cover. Many people have got it removed in the haggling process. 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2

Isn't the pre-contract inspection to do with removing the clause about not repairing faults which arise in the first 90 days of the policy? Think this is on the basis that existing faults which have not manifest themselves when the policy starts are pretty likely to appear during the first 90 days. Basically, it covers WD for a day 1 failure.

Sorted. Added suspension cover and had the betterment removed. No mention of a pre-inspection, unless it’s in the paperwork they’ll send through.
Here’s hoping I’ll never need it!
