Shocked

I'm a fan of the FL2, even more so in later years. The FL1 had few redeeming features IMO. I suppose it's how you define the term "Classic". Smile

FL2 is an excellent vehicle and would be something I'd buy if I hadn't been "ruined" by one of the big LRs. After a RRS / Disco / FFRR the FL2 feels rather ordinary with rather horrible steering.

I broke my drought and spotted a new D5 on the road this week.

The back is not the problem, the front is, the driving lights cluster is terrible, it looks like a giant bull frog coming up the road.

Of the 4 I have seen (1 on the road, 3 at dealers), they look crap with the silver alloy wheels and the front and the back of the car don't relate to each other, it looks like two different cars joined together.

I checked out a dealer demo HSE with a black pack and 20" wheels and it looks OK, but the price was more than Porsche SUV

I did a walk around a SE model at my local LR dealer, it was $96k and it didn't impress me at all and looked very plain.

I agree about the front, though it gets far less criticism than the rear, to me it’s hideous. As you say, like some flattened toad.

The rear, though not great, will be significantly improved when they centralise the number plate, as I’m sure they will.

Looks like Kingsley Holgate has traded in his fleet of D4s for D5s. He is currently on a trip up the east side of Africa:

Worth going over to the dark side?

Have tested a D5 HSE- nice ride and certainly better than my current D4. I have 3 kids and variable amounts of luggage so the accommodation is fair though we have noticed the oddly low 2nd row seats. The XC90 won't accommodate our youngest's feet as there is a console in the way. What has impressed us a lot is the Mercedes GLS which is pretty gargantuan but more interestingly are the pretty insane discounts out there of £10-14k depending on spec. I guess they were pretty overpriced to start with, but with little bargaining power with LR and their cheek to hike prices up recently it looks like I can get an equivalent Merc product to a Disco HSE lux for the same money or slightly less. Anyone had experience with GLS re ability/reliability and dealers? Thanks for any thoughts.

My 38 year old daughter happened to say today she saw a new Discovery (D5) in a nearby car park .... and commented 'what an ugly looking thing.... the front looks so wrong .. tiny headlights....' ....

I said I thought it was the back end that looked odd ...... maybe ... she said 'but the front just looks wrong'....

Go for a Volvo next time Dad she says - especially as 'Which" says all Land Rover products are a 'Don't Buy' ..... I'm pretty sure that is right....?

The facial (and other) injuries from the thoughtless design of the D5 tailgate will really create a huge marketing/design problem.

I think the main problem that LR now have, is that unless you’re a footballer you’re too young to afford it if you like it it, and too old to like it if you can afford it Whistle

What a lot of rubbish. 7 months in and I’ve yet to bang my head on the tailgate. LR aren’t the only manufacturer with sharp edges.

Which former LR vehicle is not a classic?

Freelander?

Think you will find this turns out to be a mistake. Sure the poorly designed coolant system on the petrol version and clutch failures of FL1 were teething troubles, but the TD4 version and FL2 have plenty of followers. In fact the FL2 is coming into its own as a good cheaper LR than its bigger brethren.

I go on to say how much I like the FL2.

In my own opinion, I wouldn't put either the FLI or FL2 into the "Classic" category, but accept that others might see them as such Thumbs Up

There are three ways I'd define LRs as "classic":

1) The cars are "classic" but not necessarily "a classic" - you might also phrase it classic but not iconic . Stellar, sound, as you'd expect. I'd describe the FL1 as such - indeed, probably all LRs.

2) The classic line-up - IMHO, around 2007/2008 is when the LR range was spot on (oil pump issues etc. excepted!). The FL2 had come in. The FFRR had the TDV8 and supercharged available. The Defender got the TDCi. No Evoque yet. Everything (Defender aside) had been modernised, but it hadn't gone all blingy. Each car is a classic generation of it's model.

3) Iconic/historically significant - Only 4 I'd say: The Series LR/Defender - for obvious reasons; the RR Classic - a real change of concept from the original LR; third generation FFRR - classic clean look, more authentic shape than the P38 IMO, really brought home the idea of a LR as a modern refined drive; Disco 3 - showed that refinement and virtually uncompromising utility are not mutually exclusive.

One other thing to be said for the FL1 is that it was LR's first smaller vehicle.

Thumbs Up
