I'd not use anything other than an AGM battery to the same spec. as the LR oe fit. The D4 is very power hungry even whilst it sleeps. LR had a few issues with the battery on D4's and the RRS, which I think have disappeared since they switched to AGM's.

I got mine from TLO, the forum discount made a good difference. BUT, I had to collect it.

Provided it's a minimum of 90Ah the battery will be fine (and provided it fits, and the terminals are not reversed). I've gone for a more powerful battery in the past when I was living in a place that had bitterly cold winters. Not saying it was essential, but I never had a problem starting.

I bought one of these, and it was delivered no problem.

Hi John

That Bosch is the same one as Advanced Factors are recommending, but the spec seems to be 850A whereas the original Varta on my car is 950A!

Surprised by that!

I would take an 850CCA AGM battery over a 950CCA flooded cell battery any day!

You would only need high CCA's in extremely cold weather. In warm weather, I successfully (ONLY JUST) managed to start my D3 off my Optima Yellow Top AGM (550CCA) aux battery. Actually I jump started it off my Optima when my cranking battery dropped a cell and was showing 10.6V on the voltmeter (ie. practically 0% state of charge). Jump leads were rated to 400A so they might not have carried the full 550CCA Optima capacity.

Remember D3's in 2006 came with an 850CCA battery. LR uprated to 950CCA probably to make up for cold weather issues with flooded batteries. AGM technology handles cold temperature much better. In addition, AGM holds it charge much better, is much more vibration tolerant, and is also much faster to recharge. Most importantly, AGM material has an extremely low electrical resistance, thus the battery delivers much higher power and efficiency than other battery types.

All this makes 850CCA more than enough IMO. Probably on par with a 950CCA flooded cell battery if not better.

Bought a S6013 BOSCH AGM from Advanced Factors earlier in the month - excellent battery, excellent service, excellent price - thanks Steve.

I fitted one of these (ordered from that site) to a mates D3 and noticed that the cranking was listed in EN rather than SAE/CCA. At 850 EN this would be closer to 900 SAE/CCA; quite a monster for an AGM. At less than £150 for a quality AGM they make quite a lot of sense. As is the way, the new battery removed all the doom and gloom messages from the dash so the chap is very happy.
