Time to say goodbye?

My D4 is a much-loved car. I've never had one like it before and am unlikely to have anything like it again.

But it's needing around £2.5k of work (my estimate) and, at 13 years old, is no longer able to drive into LEZs - Glasgow's goes live in a few months.

Much as it pains me, it does seem foolish to have the repairs done, rather than using the money towards a newer vehicle.

But I've been miserable all weekend as the realisation dawned. Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad

If you live within the proposed area of the Glasgow LEZ then I guess it would make sense to get rid if you need to use your car every day.

If you live outside the LEZ and would only need to drive in on occasion, personally I would be tempted to do the work and keep it. I can't think of a car I'd rather have, and £2.5k doesn't go an awfully long way when looking for a replacement, though a decent chunk of cash in it's own right.

Despite living within the London ULEZ zone I have been listening to my heart over my head for 18 months now keeping a D3 going Thumbs Up though, it helps I don't have to drive it every day, as much as I'd like to...

anyone thinking of jumping ship because of the various ULEZ zones, just do a quick check on your vehicle first.

Some 2013 and 2014 vehicles are exempt (they should not be but they are) due to the inept civil service department which is running the schemes.

I know of several friends in Birmingham who run diesel vehicles every day in the clean air zone, which are not Euro 6, however if you put the Reg in on the website to pay the charge it comes up as exempt.

They might realise one day and correct this, but knowing how govt depts work - probably not.

The London ULEZ has a different site, so run your vehicle reg through on both.

Thread Resurrection....

SWMBO has bought me a WhatCar magazine and is making serious noises about changing the Disco. Money is tight (when isn't it?), but with timing belts needing done next year, plus the usual hiccups with a 14-year old car, I reckon that my running costs on a monthly basis will work out just shy of £500. That's a fair chunk of cash to put into financing a replacement. Deposit would be the value of the Disco - WBAC suggests around £3.3k.

So - what to go for? I don't do a lot of miles on a regular basis, but do travel to Liverpool on occasion (circa 220 miles), so at the limit of range on a fully electric. I like the SUV body style and often take my mountain bike and/or dog on holidays in the UK.

Anyone got any recommendations? It doesn't need to be fully electric, so I'm prepared to consider different things.

Toyota have brought out a new Land Cruiser!

Based on the old style version but i do not know if it available yet. I know that is what i will replace my D4 with when the time comes.

If you don't need 4x4 and happy to put bikes on the roof, the the VW T-Cross 110 is a cracking car with a high sitting position. We often take SWMBO's to Chester which is 185 miles. Its super comfy, really roomy and dirt cheap to run. The engine is a little gem. Thumbs Up

Scott, clearly the correct answer (at least on this site!) must be to look for a 1993 (or earlier) D1 200Tdi or V8. At 30 years old an unmodified car is classed as being "of historic interest" for the purposes of the Scottish LEZs, and cna be driven in any Scottish LEZ.

the problem is that once you've driven a D4 or even a D3, going back in time is purely masochism.

...but as Land Rover owners, are we not already into masochism in a big way?

I'm looking forward to getting my old Defender back on the road and belching my way into central Glasgow!

Im currently in a 2016 Tiguan (17MY). Its the SEL version so has every bell and whistle you can think of (except electric boot and reverse camera) its a 2L TDI 190 4motion DSG.

The ride is a little harsh, certainly compared to the D4, but it is more than liveable with. A full 60l tank will give just about 600 miles which the lie-o-meter says is 48/49mpg and its Euro6 with adblue which lasts 5000miles

Personally i find it fun to drive when i want to without it drinking fuel and plenty of space for what i need although I may have preferred the Tiguan Allspace which has a bigger boot.

The DSG 7 speed is a nice gearbox but can be a little sluggish to change down around town, its smooth as silk under acceleration.

VAG parts prices are reasonable, (glow plugs tend to go around 60k mark but cost £20 each and take an hour to change them all)

All in all i can recommend it on a shortlist if your having to downsize from a glorious D4..... GOD I MISS MINE Big Cry Laughing

Something you've probably considered already, but worth mentioning just in case - unless you are replacing with a brand new vehicle or one with a comprehensive warranty, how do you know that the car you replace the D4 with (for lots of dosh) won't suffer costly issues in the near future?

Something I've seen people do several times is see a big set of bills coming up on their very nice, possibly slightly older car, instead of paying £2-3k to get the work done, chop the car in for a far inferior but newer car and dump £20k in the process Confused then spent the next few years missing their nice older car and wishing they'd still got it and the cash they spent on the new one. Especially when they start to get bills for the new car.

But each to their own!

I'm stil keeping mine at moment as very low mileage , now retired but wife now said she wants her own car so struggled to find a car that's looks and drives ok and she wants 4 wheel drive.
Looking at £26k but she fancied new so it's a £40k Ateca Cupra boy does it go well, acceleration is rather boy racer rapid and 40 mpg and ulez 6 as well...
so best of both worlds at moment.
