I enabled mine with my IID widget and it was much easier than I thought (translation being it works and I didn't break anything), although now thinking a remote would be much nicer! Andy

Can the normal LR remote be programmed to start the preheater (assuming receiver etc fitted) or is it necessary to have a second fob key?

If you use the BAS remote kit, the. It can be done from the lr key, if you use the lr kit it uses a separate fob. Bodsys Brake Bible

I'll be selling the remote control, aerial and control unit for the D4 timed climate soon. Just need to remove it from the car before it goes - should be within the next couple of months.
