Timing Belt, success or failure?

Got everything fitted and ready this morning for the startup ............................... the moment I had been dreading in case of metal crunching sounds...................first kick engine sprang to life Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy all is well, motor is very smooth and seems to have more power, I will report after a few days of driving and I have had a chance to feel any difference.

Time wise, absolutely no rush, took it very calmly and plenty of cups of tea, as well there were a couple of side issues I dealt with, but around 16-18 hours.

Saving...........around $1200.

Didn't take many pics, too difficult when hands are black and putting them on a good camera

Am I happy............................you bet Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Richard,

What was the condition of the old belt, how much stretch do you estimate it had undergone
and was there reasonable life still left in it ?

Neil,
The old belt still looks OK,.........However.................remember you are defying the service recommendations if you go over the "life" of 105000 miles (around 168000Kms).

For the cost of doing it yourself or the dealers cost, you are avoiding the risk of a megadollar engine disaster.

Stretch wise I didn't measure it but suffice to say that if my impressions are right and the car is smoother and quicker off the mark then there was enough stretch to alter the timing.

There was no more life in it as it's time was up.

Well done Richard K Bow down

Is it possible to measure the old timing belt, and does anyone have a measurement for a new belt so we might be able to see how much deterioration takes place over 105,000 miles. Thumbs Up

Unfortunately I have left the old belt with my parts supplier so he can forward it to the aftermarket supplier who have catalogued the wrong belt

The belt kit was genuine, comes with tensioner and new bolt, I also replaced the two idler pulleys.

CaverD3, lucky he was in warranty, and at 40000K's.

It's not the only engine configured this way........more to worry about Shocked Shocked

Congratulations Richard. Sounds like a job well done and most importantly you KNOW its been done right.

I have all my old belts still from when the dealer changed them a few weeks ago. I can measure them if anyone wants to know if they have stretched.
