Timing belt(s) replacement tips |
|
Hello
I'm looking into how to replace the timing belt, oil pump, water pump, HPFP belt & aux belt on my Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 as it's approaching 7 years old.
I'm looking for a comprehensive list of all components I require to complete & the best tools to make life easy DIY.
I'm also after any quick tips, in particular how to remove the fan shroud which from "It's LR Time" video looks time consuming.
I've read several threads:
Disco_Mikey's - TDV6 timing belt - How To...
Pete K's - Oil Pump Replacement
My parts list so far:
Dayco timing belt, tensioner & 2x idlers
Dayco HPFP belt & tensioner - Doesn't seem to require the locking tool due to the belt having timing marks
Focomo oil pump
Proflow water pump
Genuine LR crankshaft seal & crankshaft bolt
My "special" tool list:
Timing pin set - Laser or Sealey?
Crankshaft seal tool
Thanks in advance
Ollie

I was advised that my oil pump didn’t need replacing by my trusted indi when I had mine done last year. Apparently there was a design change so no need. Gary

Ditto on oil pump Gen2 engines have a different oil pump to the earlier ones .
Why mess with the crankshaft seal unless you have an obvious leak?
The best advice I would give is by the time you have bought all the bits and pieces and looked at all the videos and if you have any doubts about your capabilities as a mechanic let somebody else do it as the consequences of a mistake are to high.

Don't you plan to body off for HPFP belt ?
Perhaps you have to add a two posts lift in your tool list ?

A two post lift is the dream!
I plan to use an endoscope for the HPFP belt, struggling with the body on scratching my arms as I go.
I appreciate the design change regarding later oil pumps however with over 50k miles on now and while the timing belt will already be removed, I'd like to replace it while I've got the opportunity.
No one else will look after your car as well as you do so I'd like to work on mine myself.
Cheers
Ollie

With only 50k miles On it, maybe do the oil pump at the second belt change ?
You will be well practiced at the other stuff then.

Very complicated on a D3

Heard that's quite impossible on a D4...

I agree with Disco Mikey. He's a pro, so no worries for him, but it's not that hard to do. Getting the starter out was worse than doing the rear belt... But be prepared for some scarred-for-life forearms

I've obtained a quote from LR which has confirmed part numbers, interesting with my car being Gen2 some of the parts are significantly more expensive than Gen1 equivalents.
Can anyone confirm, is Gen2 EU6 (adBlue) 2015/2016 then onto D5 etc?
Am I right in thinking LR redesigned the oil pump & water pump for D4, and again for D4 Gen2.
LR078913 BELT - TIMING
1311306 KIT - DRIVE BELT
LR069054 KIT - FUEL PUMP DRIV
LR096231 PUMP - OIL
1102415 SEAL - CRANKSHAFT
LR013377 BOLT - HEX.HEAD
LR089625 PUMP - WATER
LR071408 V-BELT
Thanks

The D4 is a lot tighter in room than a D3, for both front and rear belt access, there is a lot more to come off when doing the rear belt on the D4,some very troublesome wire clips and brackets, just take you're time.
