tinted glass and insurance
maybe a daft question but.....
I was reading a Q&A in the sunday times In-Gear magazine which was asking about removing tinted glass from a car. They said it was expensive and you would need to inform your insurance comapny.
That got me thinking - if you have tinted glass added to a car, do you need to inform your insurers ?Also Gone : MY14 D4 SDV6 HSE : Barolo Black + Almond

I suppose it depends on what form of tint. ie factory glass, clear, but as a slight tint, or manufactured glass with dark tint (you can't see in, but you can see out) or a film applied to the inside of the standard glass, which I have in my landrover from B-post blackwards. Got it put on when I bought the landrover, but the dealer wouldn't apply it to the front driver and passenger windows. You DO have to inform your insurer as it is classed as a modification, my insurer just said 'ok, as long as we know its on' no extra charge. My wifes car as film tint added to her car and the same insurer said the same 'ok' and it is on the front windows but its only very slight, ie its legal.
If you did remove any modified tinted glass from your car and the insurer did know about the tint in the first place, then you would have to tell them because its going back to standard, so your premium may come down, plus the cost of removing the tint. Film just peels off, if its slightly heated with a hairdryer, proper glass tint would have to be replaced with new glass, obviously.

Be very careful if you try this. Like when you remove some stickers - you can be left with the most amazing sticky stuff on the glass. Also not good to try and get if off the rear (boot) windows this way as you may k-nacker the ariel and heated rear screem elements. There is a way "To finish first, one first has to finish ...."
