Tool kit for the car boot - what to put in it?

Having recently got the D3 back on the road I am celebrating by taking my three brothers and I on a 2000 mile road trip from Exeter up and around the NC500 and back, in four days. Going to be camping overnight.

Logic says that I should put together a selection of tools that will live in the boot of the D3 in readiness for the inevitable breakdown, which of course will probably happen at the 1000 mile mark furthest from home. I have AA homestart that will take my car home for me if the worst happens (is there a mileage limit?) but hopefully if anything small causes a breakdown I want to be able to fix at the roadside.

What do you all carry in the car for those times you do find yourself stranded? I am thinking:

• Trolley jack and axle stands (I dont trust the sh*tty LR one)
• Socket set
• Breaker bar
• WD40
• Rags
• Screwdrivers etc.
• Mix of nuts and bolts
• Cable ties
• Rubber mallet and hammer
• GAP IID tool
• Jump leads (thanks Mr.Pastry)
• clear duct tape (thanks Hardware)
• Torch
• wet wipes (thanks RobPensrose)
• rubber gloves/workshop gloves (thanks RobPenrose)

As well as tools I'm putting in:

• Spare fluids (oil, coolant, brake fluid, water and screenwash)
• Beer
• Whisky
• Two jerry cans of Diesel
• spare ABS sensor and Brake switch (thanks MorganD)
• spare bulb kit (thanks Mr.Pastry)
• Tib of grease

Other suggestions will be most welcome, generally for good practice and also specifically for this trip.

Spare abs sensor and a brake switch - Not fun driving on the stops miles away from home.

I’d use a Lr d2 bottle jack rather than trolley jack.

Torx drivers.

Three brother? 2000 mile trip ?

I would suggest duct tape and strong cable ties

When are you going? If it’s in the midge season, I can recommend Smidge and I also always take a head net as well. Citronella candles would be good for camping.

Enjoy the NC500 Thumbs Up

swap the duct tape for clear outdoor tape so it can do anything duct tape can plus hold a broken headlight together.

Heading up in late May, hoping to take advantage of the long daylight hours up there. I'll add repellent to the list, thanks!

Yup, the four of us are between 36 and 42 y.o. and we realised recently that we've never actually gone away just the four of us. Leaving our combined 10 kids with our missus for four days...! Should be good bonding time, and good scenery if the weather is favourable.

Order some Smidge, it was developed at Edinburgh University especially for Scottish midges. It’s far superior to generic repellant. 👍
