I thought just seriously trim back the engine cover.

Get a file or a dremel and cut back the cover some. This is what I did as well as a new hose as I didn’t want to risk the hose failing whilst travelling in a remote location.

Could you not just leave the engine cover off. Isn’t it’s only purpose to make it look less engine? Or does it actually have some acoustic use!

Yes it has an acoustic dampener effect. It’s not the end of the world if you were to leave it off.
the cover will also slightly help with engine warming time in cold weather as well - noticeable on my TD5 last winter when I replaced itPete

I just meant you wouldn't lose much coolant if you were to change it out as its high up. If you were to change a lower hose, the hole system above that point you try to empty itself.
Just checked mine. All clear and no sign of any witness marks.

Just changed the coolant pipe, quite easy, have to take a few bits off as its pretty fiddly, a little coolant out, bought Halfords OAT anti freeze / coolant. Job done, just giving it a check. Modified the cover too

This problem was posted on here about 2-3 years ago ISTR - checked mine and yep, cover chaffing away on the hose.
Dremmeled back the slot in the cover and fitted a new hose - all OK ever since - yet again, this site saved me some ££'s and hassle

Just been out in the rain to see what my top hose looks like, all looks good. Can't feel any cuts or nicks in the hose when sticking my finger in there.

Could you not just cover the offending area in good old duct tape; at least as a temporary fix? If you use a couple of layers you'll see when it starts chafing through and you just replace every now and then.
This applies to those without any leaking or significant chafing to date.Tony

I think you have fitted that hose incorrectly as its looks slightly twisted, if you notice the single white line on the hose itself right near the end? that normally lines up with a lug on the hose stub and the spring bit of the clip should sit between the other two white lines.

Hi,
Just resurrecting this thread. I noted my top hose on my D4 SDV6 (Part No LR095544) was chaffing by the engine cover. I dremelled it back and made it look neat but I guess I should replace that hose.
I see a few people have done this- my question is, do you lose lots of coolant when removing this high-up top hose and is it as easy as a top up afterwards, no special pressurising or use of the IID etc?
