No Sound
I was listening to a CD while driving and suddenly the sound disappeared. The display showed the disc was still playing but I could not hear anything through the speakers. I cannot hear anything using the radio, the DVD or the Sat Nav. If I listen through headphones, using the door mounted sockets, everything appears to be fine. Clearly the unit is still working so I think it must be the amplifier. I have tried changing the fuse for the amplifier but it has made no difference and the fuse looked fine anyway. I see a few people have had similar problems and most have been fixed by leaving the car over-night to 're boot' - this hasn't worked for me as it has been two days now!
Anyone out there got an idea what this might be?

Are 'broken' amps common - has anyone had to replace their amp?

nope, not common, although if the headphone outputs are working this would suggest a bad connection or power failure to the amp - if the fuse is OK, maybe the earth (ground) connection or a multiplug on the amp itself is loose?

Dealer has had the dash out but has been unable to find the fault in one day. He has asked for the car back for three days next week! He thinks it is something under the seats and wants the front ones removed. He said something about the aerial amp. Does this make sense to anyone?

...the something under the seat...
...is the amp! Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
Yup... sounds like the Audio Amp. The Aerial amps are all in the back above the headliner.

Thanks. I did not know the audio amp was under the front seat. The engineer said he wants to check the wiring between the audio amp and the aerial amp.

I replaced my roof mounted DVD recently. Could the installer have done something that may have triggered this problem?

Well that's funny, as they aren't connected. The aerial connects directly to the headunit! IE - 05 D3 TDV6 HSE - Zambezi Silver

Check the little plastic plug in the aux socket in the back of centre console. Wiggle it whilst cd is playing and see if the sound comes back, it did for mePot Noodle Challenge Winner 2011

I've never had this problem, but sometimes the SatNav lady drops her voice down to a really quiet whisper for no apparent reason.Have a nice day!
