My new (to me) D4 - rusty underneath |
|
Looking at My recently acquired (2009) D4 it's clear that the dealer valeted it "to within an inch of its life", - it was spotless on the inside.
However on closer inspection it looks like it's spent a fair amount of time off road. The underside is covered in mud (sandy in the main), the under trays are scuffed and there's quite a bit of rust on the chassis.
One key concern is that the top of the air springs, (the bolts etc.) are all rusty.
Should I be worried? Is there anything I could or should do about the rust (I'm a bit worried about the brake lines long term). Is it worth getting it all cleaned and waxoyled underneath?
Is there anything else that need checking given that it may have had a hard life?
Any suggestions appreciated!
Many thanks
Paul

It might be an ex-LRE one. Waxoyling is never a bad thing IMHO. The brake pipes that are exposed and corrode the quickest are above the rear diff, you could clean them up and coat with grease/waxoyl.....

I don't think it was a LRE vehicle - it's a blue XS - i think most are silver/white HSEs
It might well have have lived on the coast - it was registered in Wales, then moved to York, now in Essex.
I wish I'd crawled properly underneath before I bought it - the dealer clearly fitted side steps - they are pristine and I was lulled into a false sense of security

Definitely Waxoil it, I was concerned about my D3 when it was 4 years old showing surface rust underneath, I Waxoiled it myself and it transformed it, I have since done it another two times, the worst dirt traps I found was under the plastic sill covers between the wheels, they remove easily apart from two Philips screws at the rear end that corrode. It is an easy job to Waxoil if you have access to a compressor, bit messy. D3s coming up to 10 years old and as good now if not better than when it was 3 It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
