4WD Monthly (issue 105) D3 resale after 3 years |
|
Who read the article by Pat Callinan on fourbie resale? It's on page 125.
The D3 gets a mention under the section on "Big Wagons - Who wins."
The article states, "The Land Rover's Discovery 3 is a real mixed bag. If you drive a 2.7l turbo diesel, expect the vehicle to hold 50% of its value after 3 years. However the 4.4l Discovery 3 SE is a different story altogether according to Red Book. It says that your Disco will cop a flogging, and be worth just 37% of what you paid. So, while the retail price was $81,650 after 3 years you'll walk away with just $29,966."
I suppose these might be the dealer trade in prices and not private sale figures.
For the record a Nissan Pootrol was 55% and the 100 series LC was 53% - assume these are Diesels. So the Disco isn't that bad

I will be keeping mine well after the 3 years but I geuss if I owned one of the other brands I would want to offload it, theyll all still be playing catchup well into the next decade.

I read that and thought "OUCH" as I have a V8. Then I remembered that the price I paid is nowhere near the quoted price, so the % drop likely to be lower (assuming people have never paid list for V8s...).

I am guessing that the resale value from the D2 is being used a little bit in these figures, as no Oz D3 are 3 years old.
If these figures are true a 2 year old SE TDv6 would need to be selling for around 67% of rrp (75k) which would be around 50k. The cheapest one I have seen is high 60's.
The resale of the D3 is holding up very well apparently in the UK, and I read some where (UK thread) 6 months ago that a 2004 D3 was selling for 80% of rrp.
The last time I was in Melbourne I was talking to a city LR dealer and he says the 2nd hand value is being supported by those who would normally buy a upper spec Jap 4wd , but can't quite afford a new D3.
Car resale is highly influenced by leasing companies, as they have fixed buyout costs at the end of their leases. I doubt a high percentage of D3 are leases, and hence Resale should not be dictated by fixed buyouts, as opposed to Falcons and Holdens.
Resale is also a function of supply and demand, and i know when I was looking to buy, there where limited numbers of D3 coming in and I was able to get a dealers preordered one and only had to wait 7 weeks (As for getting any options, 6 month wait). And there where no cheap 2nd hand ones available. Trust me, what could go wrong?

I don’t know what the new car sales figures for the UK are like but even with the D3 being available for a longer time than down under but with new car sales at a very high rate down here, I think you will find that very few vehicles, 4x4s or not, are going to get very good resale values and D3s will be in this boat real quick.
For those looking for a good second hand 4x4, now is the time to buy as there are some good bargains out there for vehicles that are only a few years old. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

PCH - I missed the article, but in anticipation of the impact on the resale from off-road usage and also with the poor reputation of the D2 and RR, I went for a 4 year CHP with a 30% residual. Hopefully it will not be that bad, but best to have a nice surprise than a nasty one!
Having had a few reliability issues, I wonder how quickly, or otherwise, the work spreads and affects resale? Disco 3 TDV6 HSE, Auto, White, Rear Diff Lock.
