I am sure I will be sticking to the fact it is ugly, as in my opinion the rear end is just awful and no amount of time will improve that.
My plan is to hopefully move to a newer D4 and then regrettably look elsewhere, probably to an XC90, unless of course the new Defender eventually arrives.
The Xc90 is a nice car, but has none of the capability of the D5, you might as well look at a Q7 or X5 in that case.

Due to the image they both have, I wouldn't consider an Audi or BMW. Although it does worry me how much I like the X3 one of the directors where I work now has.Andy

I really like the look of it both inside and out and I'm quite confident i will more when i see and touch the metal. I just hope the practical deficiencies evident from what i can see so far don't blow it for me, I'm actually quite nervous. If anything i would have liked something a bit more radical, i don't get the feeling of such a forward design step as i did when the D3 came out over the D2.
I seem to recall the negativity from the D2 community for the D3 being much worse than that what the D5 is getting. The first 2 years of ownership of my D3 was blighted by ribbing from D2 people, they would take every opportunity to jibe with no substance as far as practicality, capability or features. The first time I got a couple of them in it and booted it up the bypass was met with utter silence I knew they were in awe but didn't admit it, and now 10 years on guess what ? one has and D3 and one has a D4 MY06 S - Gone but not forgotten

Many (most?) current Disco owners use them as a family estate car. Off road/towing ability doesn't even factor in their purchasing decisions. This forum is a microcosm of a particular subgroup of Disco owners that is not, I would suggest, representative of the majority of Disco buyers.
The D5 will sell like hot cakes to the housewives and the commuters who see the Discovery as cool estate car.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

I just resent the last available offering of working vehicle disappearing to satisfy the same need that's already covered elsewhere in the range. Their marketing department is more focussed on the yummy mummy set than the hairy arsed market.

Unfortunately Land Rover are now making vehicles that appeal to a wider market, you may resent it but you have to accept that is the way that it is.
You can mock it znd the potential owners, but maybe it is time to move on?

The more I've seen and read about the new Discovery the more I like it. Seems like a good Leisure version of the Luxury Range Rover.
Interesting they made it cheaper by making parts of the subframe in steel rather than alloy to make it more compact to accomodate a third row footwell.
My next LR will probably be a specimen of the last incarnation of the D4, think it will suit my collection as I have a weak spot for the last of each kind. But then, after that gap is filled it will most certainly be a D5 or L405 because I fear the new Defender will be way too expensive for a Dual Purpose vehicle, but hope I'm wrong.
