Handbrake cable to hub fitment query

Morning All,

Just putting mine all back together after a couple of month of rot banishment and underbody protection.

I bought a new genuine EPB module as i'd put firstline cables on my old one 4 years back and the cables were looking poor again and the module is 20 years old now. Plus its much easier whilst the diff etc was out.

Anyhow. Nipped out this morning to put rear arms and hubs back on and when I put the new handbrake cables in to the threaded tubes in the hubs, the handbrake cable never gets nipped in by the plastic nut, even if that nut is wound into its shoulder. There's still 12-13mm of slop.

Its like the "stop" or sleeve inside the threaded tube is fitted too far in, so handbrake cable is able to go to far into hub. I put britpart backplates on it a couple of years back, so am suspicious of these. Previously i'd blamed this looseness on the firstline cables. Both sides the same.

Is this normal or when that nut is tight, should the cable be gripped against a stop inside that tube?

I’m an idiot! Well that’s been established a long time anyway.

E clips!! When I had the old cables out there was just rotten mush in those tubes, no discernible clips. I found a random pack with 2x E clips in the bottom of my parts delivery. Assume these must be what holds the cable against the threaded tube in the back plate and stops it travelling to far in towards hub?
