How can u tell if D3 clock spring supports D4 heated seering

Hi all

Want to change my non heated D3 steering wheel with a D4 heated steering wheel.

How can I visually tell if my clock spring has the connector/feed to support the D4 steering wheel?

And can I swap my airbag and airbag cover from the D3 to the D4?

Thanks

Lucio

D3 does not have provision for a heated wheel as standard so you will have to acquire a clock spring that can. The air bags are the same and you just swap it over. Don't forget the switch and a suitable cable to provide the power. Fitting a D4 wheel itself would be a more major effort.... why not use a heated D3 wheel?

It is a really nice mod.

I thought the last of the D3's had a heated steering wheel as an option? 2009MY I think it was introduced as an option.

Clock spring definitely changed for 09MY to part number LR018556

May be talking Censored though Laughing

Switches will not work as they are LIN bus on D4 (kind of a lightweight CAN bus) and resistor ladder on D3.

That's okay I am waiting on Colin's kit for the D4 wheel, then it should be happy, as this is just a wire connection via the slip disc surely

If anyone successfully does this please let me know. I have just seen on YouTube a company in Cyprus has done the conversion. Noted it's not heated but all the buttons seem to work. They're called black box solutions. Will post the link in a bit.

Hi Colin,

Does this mean the ACC is working on the discovery 3 as well now??, or did that just hit a wall?

Cheers Rob

Hungry for more already eh Rob Thumbs Up

The ACC mention in this and the D4 wheel thread is only in respect of support for existing ACC equipped vehicles.

However as you mention that ACC retro fit project Wink

The ACC project did indeed hit a bit of a wall.

To surmmarise, we built a retro fit rig of all the bits required which worked to a point, but constantly gave not calibrated and FA switch faults We tried this ourselves and had a Member here try it too, both without any progress despite repeatedly checking the FA switch circuirty was correct.

However the ECU used was suspect and could have had a problem with the FA switch input or the rig and sensor could have had any one of a number or other problems, so we purchased a new ECU and built a second rig.

However we could not even establish diagnostic communications at all with this.

All not going well at all and hence the wall.

Of course this has been back burnered but by no means forgotten.

I fully intend to try a new approach to this and last week had both ACC rigs on my desk along with the Proper mounting bracket for the sensor on my 2010 RRS and a brand new 2010 type ACC ECU that TLO worked outstandingly hard to obtain for me.

On Monday I get my RRS back from the paint shop as well as the currently removed front bumper and fully intend to retro fit ACC to it and prove that the sensors are working at least before I refit the Bumper.
