The big question (I didn't ask) |
|
Having just ordered a D4 Commercial and read a few threads on here about lead times and build slots, I began to feel that my "we won't know anything until January" for an order I placed in September was a little too vague.
I rang the sales guy who very bullishly started to tell me it was likely to be March or April next year. "Okay - so how many slots do you have at your disposal and when will my order get one of said slots?" I asked.
Then followed a mildly shameful explanation that there are 6 other commercials waiting for slots before mine. After a little more pushing, it transpires they usually get two commercial slots per month; add in the 12 week build time and we have March/April.
Feeling very cheated by only now having this explained, I asked if he felt this was perhaps something he should have explained prior to taking my deposit and his response was "all dealerships are the same". That might just so be the case but I don't feel it justifies not explaining the situation so that I can make a choice.
They matched others on price but could they match them on build slot allocation/availability? That is the question I should have asked.
So the moral of this story is to always ask what a dealership's order book looks like and their normal allocation of build slots. Work out the time it is likely to take before your car gets a slot and factor that into your decision. I had 3 dealers matching each other on price - I will never know now if the others could have delivered quicker than April next year (if indeed it is then). Phil

Difficult one - I share your pain in the lack of information from dealers but a six month lead time for a Commercial is in line with normal experiences...
If it's any comfort, my current Commercial was ordered in September last year and was sat in the dealer in the last 10 days of Feb awaiting a 1st March delivery.
Hope it turns up earlier than expected - bloody briliant when you get it! D4 Commercial - 65 Plate, 2016MY
D5 Commercial - Handed back when I left that job…
D4 Commercial (2014MY) - gone
D4 Commercial SDV6 - Baltic Blue (also gone)
D1 300TDi... 2" lift, HD bumpers (both), detachable tow hitch, 9,500lb winch, 235/85/16 muds and plenty of other toys (gone to make way for the next toy...)
Smiles per Mile - Tornado Motorsports caged Evo 3... 100" Defender look-alike, with Range Rover running gear - all fully IVA'd and registered!
