tailgate dust

Have just completed a trip on a VERY dusty gravel road where high speed is possible. Apart from playing with the brilliant DSC which saved me from certain embarrassment a couple of times, my only other hassle is with the amount of dust being sucked in through the tailgate seal.

Anyone had similar? Do we dress the rubber with something (a light coating of silicone O ring grease....??) that may prevent this. Tailgate seems to fit well with no excess movement when closed. I would hesitate to adjust for a tighter shut as it already needs a good slam to get it to shut completely.
 Near enough 40 degrees South!!!

Too damp over here for that sort of thing. More worried over here about water getting in.

Does it happen around the door seals as well as the tailgate. I mean, is it like the aircon is creating a pressure drop in the car that is drawing the dust in, and the only place it gets past the seal is the tailgate?

At the risk of being boring.... Rolling Eyes any vehicle moving at speed will create a depression at the rear of the vehicle (NO... I dont mean put the mother-in-law in row 3), this will draw particulate matter into it (being of a lower density) having the windows open will cause this to be drawn in past the seals an out through the open windows.... told you it was boring... (if the windows were closed, this can still occur through the vents that every vehicle has, but not as badly) silicone grease will only trap the dust, but if you're happy to clean it now ant then, shouldn't be a problem Wink

So I wasn't far wrong with my thought on what was happening, just the cause - being vehicle induced pressure rather than air con.

Can you do anything to create a positive pressure in the vehicle to stop the dust coming in?

Rich,

This same dust problem occurs with my D3. I did 3 trips on very dry dusty roads in the Victorian High Country and the dust just seems to enter through the upper tailgate.

I just live with it and vacuum the rear area after the trip.

Lubing the seals will only make the dust stick to the seals and door and in time it would be a real mess to clean.

The dust shouldn't enter the car. The seals must be damaged if it does.

Putting up with it is and cleaning not a great option as I have photographic gear and dust is not great with that.

The dust that is getting in seems to be near where the tailgates join in the middle (I can see where it has tracked through the rubber), and it is only bad enough to be a pain. Just reminds me of 10 years of Range Rover Classic tailgates before they finally got it right with the 95-96 ish HSE.

are the latched adjustable?
Had a disco 1 that leaked like a sieve until I 'compensated' by tweaking the latch positions Idea once it had been run in Rolling Eyes

I've just returned from a trip up the north of Western Australia travelling on a lot of dirt roads, although the seals are very dusty I did not have any dust in the car. I do find that I have to really slam the tailgate for it to close properly..

I will try bottom tail gate adjust... as top has to be slammed hard already.
