Roof Rails in Australia?

I know this issue has been covered before in the UK, but does anyone know if we can buy the Roof Rails (part # CAB500120PVJ) outside of the LR dealers here in Australia?

I have a couple of prices from the dealers and ain't cheap at more that $550 for the set. Note, I'm only referring to the long rails that are bolted longitudinally to the car, not the cross bars that bolt on to the rails.

Cheers

mobyone,
I bought the Rhino Rack version for a fraction of the price of the LR original (<AUD150). In my opinion they are better looking (they don't sit as proud as the LR originals), and naturally all the Rhino gear fits.

I got mine from the Rhino factory in Rydalmere but most ARB stockists have them as will many other commercial rack providers (Telstra and like use Rhino gear so it is pretty accessable)

I fitted them myself and it was al pretty straight forward.

I have only found you need to get the complete package, roof bars plus cross bars. Have been quotes about $480 fitted.

Haggis, where did you get a <$150 price?

Rhino bars for D3

I just paid $438 for a D3 Rhino rail and bar set. That's RRP I think as I was quoted the same price from the roof rack place I bought it from, and an ARB dealer.

They both quoted me an extra $90-100 to fit it, but I did it myself so I could have a slightly non standard bar spacing, and the sportz bars had to be cut to the right length. I have a removable metal basket on there, and plan to leave the rhino sportz cross bars on all the time.

They went on really well, great fit etc, so I would highly recommend the rhino rails and bars.

If anyone want to know the tricks/pitfalls in fitting, just drop me a line. It was not that hard.

roof rails

for those that are a bit slow today... Rolling Eyes (like me...) I can confirm that (as per CaverD3's advice) Rhino do make a track set for their standard bars to fit D3's without the factory fitted tracks. Part number RTS502 and cost is <$150 from most stockists (as per advice from Haggis). Very Happy

MZC, I was informed by the local dealer that the Rhino tracks will need to be riveted to the roof as well as using the original factory bolt holes. He didn't sound too convincing as he hadn't done a D3 before..
Is that right?

Cheers

Just spoke to Rhino. The track fits into the LR bolt holes but they supply rivets as well because if the extreme ends are used or the rack overhanges the front extra load is exerted. An improvement on LR tracks?
Probably will never need to remove so probably better getting the rivets in.

Rivits

Yes, sounded scary drilling holes in the roof of my new toy at first, but it's OK really! It's in the channel, no one will ever know!

They bolt on using the existing roof bolts. The rivet is right at the very rear of the rail. Only recommended by Rhino if you want to put a cross bar behind the rear set of bolts, which you can't really do anyway if you plan on opening the tail gate!

I ended up riveting mine anyway, as it holds the tail of the rail down better.

The other main trick was the plastic screw things that hold the factory trim in. The best way I found to remove them was the point of a very small screwdriver pressed into the outer edge, then screw the thing out. Leaves a tiny mark. Better than trying to pull then straight out! The front pair will need to be carefully removed and then replaced after cutting the rubber trim (which is actually rubber on steel). I used a cutoff saw for that, and to cut the cross bars to length.

You can always drill the rivets out if you want, but I hope I don't have to remove the rails.

If I get another D3 (or should I say when!) I could remove them if really needed.

Keep the original rubber strip and plastic rivets its just in case!

Done

All done in half an hour... thanks to simple instructions with Rhino product. Note: you can choose not to place pop rivet at the very back of the track...as I did. I think the Rhino track is slightly wider the the genuine LR track however the Rhino sits lower to the roofline, so regardless I'm a happy camper.. Very Happy

you will have to remove the bolt hole plugs. I used a small screwdriver to simply unsrew them.

Not a bad job for $150.... Wink I'm sure LR wouldn't have done it any better!

Thanks again for all the advice on Rhino. Thumbs Up now just need the bars Shocked
