Trolley Jack Reach
Considering buying a Trolley Jack to aid in wheel swaps. Rating wise I know I need a 3 Ton or similar but can anyone advise what reach (height) it needs to be able to extend to for wheel swaps?Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

You don't need a 3 tonne jack a 1.5 tonne will do. Get a standard good quality jack and jack the vehicle up by placing the jack under the wishbones.
I have one of these its very light and is used by quite a few of the rally support teams, mine was used quite a lot by our competing teams in Morocco last year.
Oh and don't forget to do it safely In the Beginning there was nothing, which exploded.

Well the best budget Trolley jack (according to my t'internet search) is the Clarke CTJ3000QL - 3 tonnes, 540mm reach and not so many pumps up - so I bought one from MachineMart for £41 Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

This is big enough to jack the car up using the std jacking points. Dont use it on std tarmac though as it may sink ...Duncan

Steve I've got that one ...as Dunc indicates you need a cut of marine ply, or the likes, to go under the trolley wheels if on tarmac 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

Excellent - my only concern was the (small) size of the saddle pushing up against the chassis - it feels to me as if it needs some kind of cap on it with an upwards facing locator (as the std jack) into the chassis slotSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

I always use a piece of wood on top of the jack when jacking the chassis. Stops the paint getting damaged, and spreads the load. Don't use a piece of wood if you jack under a wishbone though, it can slip off there.
