Disco 4 or RRS ?

Hi all

Just joined D4 forum to get some thoughts. I gave up my 4.4 V8 FFRR earlier this year and now have an ML270 to run about it. Much missing LR / RR though so given new job am looking to get something say 2009-2010.

Probably give FFRR a miss as TDV8 of that age out of £££ I want to spend so looking at perhaps earlier RRS or Disco 4. Both forums, like the FFRR one, full of niggles etc but what car doesn't have some "features".

What I would love though are any experiences folk may have of owning both or even FFRR and Disco.

I feel RRS is ok but love the practicality of the Disco. All kids gone, 2 ageing dogs that go in my car not the other half's Evoque and generally load up snowboard and ski gear.

All thoughts gratefully accepted.

Cheers

T

Thanks DG. Interestingly folks on RRS forum all saying D4 is the way to go and seems a lot of them taking the same route.

Interesting to see any folk on here have come from RRS ?

I was one of those who posted in your thread on RRS. Wink

Definitely consider the D4 seriously if you need the extra space. One the inside up front, they are a very similar places to be.

Only thing I miss from my MY12 RRS is the Dynamic mode, but once you get confidence in the Disco's handling, you'll not really notice that either.

Apart from the looks and the more palatable price tag there really is little to separate the two cars. Thumbs Up

Hi,
I have just changed from a 2009 tdv8 FFRR to a 2012 D4 decided on a D4 for a change already had a couple of RR and a sport.
Been very impressed with the way it drives and the way it handles on the road, don't need the seven seats but have already been used a few times.
Bigger boot this time swung us from 4.4v8 diesel RR more than enough room for all the gear we take when going away in the caravan.
Personally would not get another sport as to small in the back for kids and the boot is smaller, though there are some nice spec ones going about.
Had a v8 diesel new sport for a couple of days now could seriously be tempted very nice indeed (small matter of 96k though).
Will stick with the disco for two years and see what price new FFRR come down to then, looked at many other manufacturers offerings but can't see past landvrover at the moment.

I had 2 sports and they are great, it depends what you want they are different as is the price!

The disco has many cool features, but it's not as cool in looks as the sport nor does it handle as well, the disco is more flexible

Left a RRS for a Disco 4.

Had RRS for 3 yrs.
For me the cabin was a nicer place, but then not as much room. Having kids and camping trips the RRS did them but needed a roof rack as well. The rear cargo area though a fair size always needed careful packing if near full due to the sloping rear tailgate. Mine was the split tailgate and certainly found this very useful, would not of liked the all in one on later models.

Off road not much difference to D4 except the plastic moldings on the bottom of doors, which do get damaged easily and can jam the door shut or put it out of true.

Had the RRS keyed within the first week of ownership Big Cry and generally found much more of a marmite reaction from others with the RRS.

All in all the RRS a very good car, but the Disco 4 lends itself to anything and accomplices it with ease and have always found Disco's to be better received in public, probably due more to its working class credentials and practical no nonsense get it done styling

Had many of both......

Always liked the RRS and never needed the 7 seats but given D4 pretty luxurious anyway always felt I was getting 'more for the same amount' (company car, no price differential to me whichever I had) so flitted between them both.

Never felt as bad just opening the tailgate and 'chucking stuff in' on the D4 and its was just that tad more 'practical' when needed also (just used one doubled up with a Trannie van to move house Thumbs Up ).

Same engine and similar performance and fuel economy (I'd say RRS a tad better) so not a lot to choose there.

As said though they do seperate opnion; RRS seen as 'footballers' car and created rage/jealousy the D4 never attracted.

However I'm going down route of new RRS next week specifically because it has the new ally chassis and the V8 diesel Thumbs Up If D5 has same engine option then that quandary starts all over again Laughing

Just had a new RRS for two weeks, as my Disco was in for some work, initially I thought wow this is great, nicer interior and a lot more poke, but after a week the novelty wore off, I felt cramped in it, even putting seat belt on etc you were fighting to find it behind you, the controls weren't as fluid or quick and yesterday got my disco back and thought, yep this is nicer, two weeks ago I was pricing up a RRS but after two weeks of it, whilst still very very nice to look at and the performance was nice, I would rather my Disco.

Hi T - always good to have more Arabs on here! (Tangerine Arabs)

RRS is more fun to drive, but the D4 will put a bigger smile on your face and be so much more practical. 7 seats to fill on the way to the cup final!

Had umpteen FFRR and moved to Disco4's in 2010 and would not move back. Now on my third.

If you do country things (shootin'/fishin'/huntin'/farmin' etc) then Disco 4 is best car on the road no doubt about it. It does everything you will need on and off road, cleans easily (use a hatchbag in the back), chuck kit/dogs (wife?) in the back;seats for 7 (includes occasional In-laws!) and sit back and smile!!

As for the Sport, it is unashamedly aimed at the "never offroad" owner, as is now the FFRR. Both are TOO luxurious to get muddy and dirty.

Incidentally, I have never got stuck off road, even on road tyres, the car is THAT good!
