With all of the intelligent people on here, has anyone come up with a means of
Charging your key fob up remotely (not in the ignition)
I wonder if you could use an electric toothbrush charging station or such like as these use
An inductive charging method

Hmm,
A rather innovative idea Albert Not sure or heard of anyone doing this but maybe someone that loves a bit of electrickary such as "wiggs"can advise!

TBH,if you swap and use keys regular in the car,i think the keys with decent battery cells in are supposed to hold up for around 6 months

Funnily enough I was thinking of this myself today and in trawling the net for information I've come across your post. My car gets driven intermittently and can stand for several weeks, and after, it only gets short drives. I suspect both my keys have discharged and don't get long enough in the ignition to recharge in the car.
Did you ever try using a electric toothbrush charger to recharge the ignition key, and if so did it work?
I've been looking around for an off vehicle charging solution to keep the keys topped up. After a period on no use the key will not operate the remote locking, or possibly only if standing right next to the car. They start the car fine and after being in the ignition will operate the remote locking. To me its sounds like the batteries are discharged and never have long enough to recharge, hence looking for an off vehicle solution.

I never used my spare key on the D3 for 6 years, and when I did it worked fine.. so I cant see the problem - perhaps there is more fundamental issue with your keyfob Duncan

Yes, its possible there is something more fundamental; there's several possibilities mentioned in the forum. Trouble is fault finding and intermittent problem can be a bit hit and miss.
As I said after the keys have been in the car they work fine...so long as I keep using them. After a few weeks of non use they don't unlock the car.
I'm sure there's a raft of possibilities, its just a case of hitting on the right one!

I think a better investment would be new batteries, my spare key gets minimal use, some times as long as 6 months and then only on a short journey. It can when others can't,

I took my key apart to solder in a new battery bought from CPC.co.uk (£2.30)
Unless the battery is somehow induction charged like a toothbrush (which I doubt) then the key cannot charge the battery as the key blade is not connected to the circuit board !!
One thing ! Do I need to take the key to dealer to get it matched to my car ?

It is induction charged. The coil I believe sits behind the plastic cover round the ignition switch.

Oh !
My spare key was also dead which is the one I have replaced the battery in. It didn't even start the car despite turning the barrel.
Would I need to take it to dealer to have it remapped ?

Hi all. Great Forum with loads of useful information.
My spare key packed up altogether last week. I opened the fob and with a soldering iron replaced the VL2330 rechargeable battery, which has worked on previous occasions, but the fob still didn’t work. Completely dead.
I bought a £15 replacement form well known website with 433MHZ frequency and blank HU101 key blade. I swapped the blank blade with my spare (there are plenty of tutorials on YouTube showing you how to extract the blade locking pin). I connected my GAP IID app on iPhone with IID in the car and followed the Body Control / key programming process. It did take 2 attempts (probably operator error on my part) but on the second attempt everything worked, and I have a replacement spare costing £15 compared with humongous amount Jaguar Land Rover dealer would charge. On this and other forums there is discussion on how the fob battery charges up when inserted into the ignition, because if you open the fob up, there is no electrical connection between the key blade and the PCB. Apparently, the answer is that the Disco has an induction loop surrounding the ignition barrel which charges the fob battery in exactly the same way a cordless toothbrush is charged up. If you open the fob or check the attached pic, you can see on the PCB next to the blade pivot, a long black circuit device labelled L1 which would be the device closest to the ignition barrel. This I believe is the corresponding induction loop in the key fob, which absorbs the energy from the ignition barrel induction loop. All LED interior

When I bought my D3 it came with 3 key, one completely mullered and scrap, one a bit tired but worked.
The third needed a new case but the pcb itself looked ok. I bought a new case, swapped over PCB and key stem but the car was unresponsive.
Left it for a day sitting on the wifes toothbrush charger and it worked perfectly, opened doors at range and started the car with no errors. Still worked fine 9 months later but I did used to swap them about.
So I can say with absolute certainty that if the only problem is the battery then the toothbrush charger trick works. A visitor from the dark side, my other vehicle is an is still an EV. Strictly speaking its SWMBO.
