What are they really good for? Do they prevent damage whilst offroading? If the black ones scratch do they lose the color?

They'll protect your car from some damage, but at the risk of damage to the side tube. I know what I'd rather have. Because they aren't cantilevered, it's relatively easy to bend them so they sit higher relative to the sill line. My right hand tube is higher than the left due to grounding out, but not so you'd notice.
They aren't a rockslider by any stretch of the imagination, but they do save you from scrapes along the lower edge of the doors when driving in deep mud. As for discolouring, the underside of mine have some rust streaks where the coating has been damaged, but they are only visible if you are under the car.
Personally I rather like the look of them, so if I do damage them too much I'll probabably replace them with another set, although I will spend some time looking at alternative mounting methods, cantilevered off the chassis. I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Where are you planning to fit them? Front and back along the bumpers I hope
Private joke guys, Mounty can explain if he wants to but you can probably work out where I am coming from.
Let's just say Mounty has (had) the only D3 in Switzerland with colour coded trim.
Life is what you make it.
