Battery woes
Hi all,
Got in the car today and it's clear that the battery is dead. All kinds of weird electrical gremlins and just clicks when trying to start.
LR want £200 for a new AGM battery and also say it needs coding to the car (well, the modules need resetting). Just checking the latter is the case as I have the JLR coding software available if needed.
Thanks
Mark

I am sure I have read on here the settings do need updating for the switch to an AGM battery, but I am sure someone better informed will be along shortly!Andy

Yes, you need to tell the BMS that you've fitted a new battery. You can do this with the IID tool D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT
D4 MY13 HSE Lux - RLD/IID BT
P38 RR - Sad parting
110 - Even sadder parting

So how does that work if you were to take it out of the car to charge or something like that?Joined the BMWX5 45e group

From my understanding, the BMS uses to age of the battery to determine what algorithm it uses to regulate the charge going to he battery. It tracks how the battery ages, and adapts the alternator output to suit.
If you remove the battery to charge, then the BMS doesn't need a reset, as it's still the same battery. I always charge mine connected to the vehicle, so that the BMS senses the charge. Connect the +ve to the +ve terminal of the battery, but make sure the -ve is connected to a body earth point and NOT the -ve terminal of the battery - it must be downstream of the BMS sensor!D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT

This is the first time I've ever heard such a thing in my 2+ years of D3 ownership and reading this forum. I replaced my battery 2 years ago without doing any programming changes.
What about the dual battery split charge system I just installed 3 weeks ago? What about that situation?1998 Discovery LSE - Gold, 249,000+ miles, completely stock

^^^^^^^ Most excellent replacement for my 5 year old LR battery.
Any good for a D4?
A great battery for a D3 but the D4 really needs an AGM; on a MY12 it is what the system is expecting to see.
The BMS does need resetting, either by a dealer, Indy or an IID.

There is no BMS on a LR3 / D3. The charging strategy on your LR3 would have been set for a standard lead acid battery.

As Robbie said, there is no BMS in an LR3, and as this topic was posted in the Disco 4 section, I didn't think to caveat my response saying it related to D4 only D4 MY14 XXV - RLD/IID BT

Doh! So, it's for D4's only!?!?! Explains why I've never heard of such a thing. Seems like a step backwards for D4's.
P.S. I don't even know what BMS stands for. 1998 Discovery LSE - Gold, 249,000+ miles, completely stock
