Hi Big Kev
I'm in need of aux. battery to support my engle whilst camped out but still scratching my head as to where to install it! Like I got about 100mm between existing bat/power steering pipes/w.s wash bottles etc. (Disc 3 TDV6) so any help/suggestions would be appreciated.
Whilst on the subject, Catweasel's direction to a previous post in 2006 is an interesting one. My caravan connection has a hot wire powering the caravan's "Cetec" power system which in turn is topping up the onboard deep cycle bat. Am I right in assuming that as this connection is not via the disco's charging circuit it's unlikely to present a problem?

I had this installed by TJM who said it was better than any product they had and deals with the problems of the unique Disco system, and the web site is www.traxide.com.au
I am not an interested party in any of these suppliers.

Thanks catweasel, I had forgotten about that post.
Hi Big Kev, although we had our unit tested by LRA and they were happy with it’s operation and sent details to LR in Britain.
We received a favourable report from LRA via E-mail but this does not amount to an official approval and we found out later that LR does not give written approval for anything unless directly related to the production requirements SO our units will work in D3s and RRSs without causing any problems because they have been officially tested but they are NOT an Officially LR approved device. ( if you get my drift )
The reason LRA came to me in the first place was because a number of DBSs were and still are causing incompatibility problems when fitted to D3s and RRSs.
To date, not one of our units has caused a single problem in these vehicles which goes to show building these special units to LRA’s spec requirements has paid off.
We now have a Plug-&-Play system specifically designed for the D3 and RRS but I am in the midst of updating my web site and have not added them to the site yet.
The kit take about 30 to 45 minutes to fully fit and comes with everything you need except the battery. We even use the LR battery bracket.

Hi Supercattonk, you should be able to drop a 55 A/H battery into the auxiliary battery compartment in the engine bay and if you read through the data on my web site about the SC40 and the SC80, the operation and, more importantly, the shared battery benefits of the these units are similar to the LR versions and this may be of specific interest to your needs.
As to using the Cetec, can you post a bit more info on your set-up, I think I get what your on about BUT?
Cheers and PM me if you would like some more details. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

Thanks again catweasel, the pic's show very neat installation, I should have had a look under all the plastic covers!! My vehicle has two 7 pin plugs fitted (as off the showfloor so I assume they all do!) and they both have direct battery current wired in without needing igition on. I thinks its the #2 pin allocated for reverse so it supplies vehicle bat power to the caravan and via a "power supply" unit in the van it can charge or top up the van battery as well as supplying power to fridge whilst its on 12v for travelling.
TRM, thanks, I will probably go the same way. What AH battery did you get, 55AH?? Do you run an Engle (or simular) off this?

Hi Supercattonk, although those wires would power a fridge, both the size of the plug pins and the wires thickness rules out this power supply for trying to charge a battery and remember, while you are driving, your fridge is still requiring power so the combined current load of trying to charge a battery and power the fridge at the same time means you will take for ever to charge the battery, if you can at all and the lower voltage, because of the load, means the fridge has to work harder.
Much safer to run new heavy positive and negative cables from the front to the rear of the D3.

Hi Nikademus,
Does the black plastic cover still fit over the battery?

Drivesafe,
Quick question slightly different from the post.
Is there any issue with installing an ignition activated solenoid to an anderson plug. Looking to put an anderson plug on the car to charge the batteries in my camper. As i have 220Ah in the camper I don't need a dual battery system I just want to run power from the car to the trailer while driving between stops hence the activation with ignition only. Is the solenoid the best answer or is something else better.
Cheers
Steve

Hi SMK, I apologies in advance for the following post but first off, this idea of driving around with live AC in a caravan, camper trailer or even in the tow vehicle is shear utter madness.
This has been debated on a number of sites and as there is no way to make this operation 100% safe, it just should not be done. None of us plan to have an accident but as the name implies ACCIDENTS DO HAPPEN and this type of operation not only can put your life at risk but far more importantly, you will be putting the lives of potential rescuers at risk.
Furthermore, to operate this set-up properly you need to run decent size cable and if you run the correct size cable in the first place, you will charge batteries quicker straight off the alternator than you will with an inverter/battery charge set-up and the larger the battery or number of batteries and the lower they are when you start driving, the slower an inverter/battery charger will charge as compered to charging off the alternator.
As to your question, I would look for a circuit that is only live with the ignition in the on position and leave the alternator alone. There are just too many things that can go haywire in these vehicles that at the time may seem unrelated to what you may have done, so do it the safe way or as stated above, there is no need to do it at all. 2008 TDV8 RR Lux + 2009 D4 2.7

??? Who mentioned AC voltage?? I think you've misread the 220AH (ampHour) as 220V.
SMK, I just took the live feed from the second trailer plug and it seems to provide enough current to keep my friidge/freezer running while we're travelling. Someone posted up the wiring diagrams for the two plugs on here, but I can't locate it at the moment.

Thank you disco4x4au, I obviously can’t see for looking.
My apologies SMK but luckily I still managed to answer your question anyway.

why not use a solar panel to charge the batteries while en-route and use them to charge while unhitched from the vehicle, no messing with the Disco then and the charging solution travels with your camper.
