Hi ,
my Disco's got a new tow bar now. What surprised me a bit when iI nstalled a 4 bike carrier on it (Thule)was that the tow bar is a bit shaky. It's not completely stable - if I push to the bike carrier, I can move it a little bit up and down on either right or left side. Is that normal? btw, it's a quck mountable tow bar.

Mine's very solid. It doesn't move at all. Check to see your socket is clean.
If it is, borrow another towbar to see if it's your socket in the car or try yours in someone elses car to see if it's the towbar at fault.

I drove alongside a D3 with the removeable towbar a couple of weeks ago, as it was pulling a large double axle caravan down the M6. The towbar was flexing alarmingly - not loose in the holder, but you could see the towbar itself flex over bumps in the road. OK, so I'm sure it's safe enough, but it wouldn't do much for my confidence. Arctic Frost TDV6 5-seat

My LR detachable towbar is a bit shaky as well, I just assumed they were all like that. I have a Thule rack with a box on in which does wobble, although it looks to be perfectly safe.

Well, obviously that's how it is. I already tested it now and it seems to be safe with fully loaded 4 bike carrier on it. It's however strange feeling when something that's expected to be absolutely stable moves.
