SNOW CHAINS
Hi all, I have a V8 HSE with 255-55-19's on and have ordered a set of snow chains. To my dismay I read in the manual that snow chains should only be fitted to the front tyres although no reason is given. Does anyone out there no if this is correct or if it is Land Rover being over cautious? I will be travelling in icy conditions thru Lesotho and would prefer to have all 4 tyres chained if possible.Life is where your discovery takes you........

I believe he had to fit spacers so tht the chains would fit.

here i am, sorry i am late, i have a note from martin
i dont know why LR say only on the front, but i can tell you stick to your plan and put them all round. Thats what i did it works great, very hard to stop it.
the only thig i woud say is dont use cheap chains, the D3 is very heavy and will make of lesser chains, i used Pewag chains, not cheap but good and i still have them.
i did need to fit 30mm spacers for these chains there was just not enough clearance to some front suspention parts.CLUB "Ah Shor it'll be grand"

thanks guys,
i spoke with my Land Rover dealership today and they tell me that snow chains on the back puts too much strain on the rear diff when it is locked, and would void the warranty if any problems & at R70000.00 for a new diff i shouldn't take a chance. Then spoke to another dealership who says its ok to use chains on the back so am waiting for that in writing from them before I proceed.

So if you haven't got a active rear diff it's not an issue by the sounds of it The End

"Too much strain" is that a technical expression i wonder.
So lets have a look at the facts, Snow chains increace traction on slippy surfaces. so you dealer is saying that when you have good traction and the diff is locked it increaces strain on the diff ??? Surley this "strain" would be the case with good traction anywhere then with or without snow chains

you are absolutely right chris
i find that more often than not these guys that work for land rover don't know what they're talking about - basically what the dealership is saying is that they don't have much confidence in their rear diffs and that i must treat it gently
very strange unless there is possibly some other good reason i am not aware of Life is where your discovery takes you........

As long as you dont "floor it" and then suddenly get traction you should be alright. I have a similar issue with my Defender. If I'm right foot heavy the wheels will spin, suddenly get maximum grip and bang..., half shaft breaks.Duncan

Seams like the dealers just say the first thing that pops into their heads if it saves them a bit of working really finding out. D3 HSE V8...
I got mine from JJ @ Frogs Island4x4
They are also availble from Chris @ TBR in Harwich, which is where I believe Chris got his.
we fitted them our selves in the snow on Le Croisiere.
The Chains came from Polar in Tunbridge Wells. They were not as heavy duty as Chris's Pewags but they did the job no problem and are much easier to fit.
