What do these wires & black box do?

Why is it never Censored simple?

I was doing some digging yesterday investigating my wet passenger foot well and trying to come up with a plan to figure out a way for the sunroof drain replacement. However it didn't last long.

As soon as I dropped the glove box I was greeted with this red wire coming from F43

Which should be for the central locking?

I then removed the A pillar (carrying on with the original job) to be greeted by the red wire again and finding a cut grey/green wire

Pulling off the door seal revealed this:

I traced it back to some sort of black box which is screwed to the roof, underneath the headlining (drivers side), between the driver and middle passenger. The red wire coincidentally connects to a grey/green wire!

All a bit weird.

What does the black box do?
What does the grey/green wire do/power?
Why would anyone do this? (I haven't checked to see if the grey/green wire has a break elsewhere which I guess would be the only reason for doing this?)

Anyway, moving back to the original job, I took the lower cover off under the glove box and was greeted by a broken grey wire!!! I can't find the other end. What does the grey wire do?

The car has no aftermarket alarm (that I know of, just the original key), it has Bluetooth so no need for an aftermarket phone kit so I am a bit baffled.

To throw a few extra things into the mix an end of an AUX lead fell out and a speaker?!

I was wondering if it was a tracker or some bit of kit designed to cut the car out if it was on finance e.t.c. (for missed payments).

Its a TDV6 HSE 55 plate with rear air con. Everything appears to work other than intermittent air con which I believe is the compressor and the sun roof, which calibrates all day long but wont save it - so it doesn't actually work.

Thanks for any help and Happy New Year! Smile

It does look like it, but there are no other signs from a car kit.

After reading this thread - https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/central-loc...68-60.html

It looks like the black box is the antenna for the remote central locking. I wonder if the joins in the passenger side rail (like in that thread) have failed and someone has just added a 12v supply to it instead?

Speaker definitely points to aftermarket hands free. Bear in mind a lot of companies would have just fitted a standard off the shelf hands free kit rather than retro fit the LR one as they would have them on the van/in stock and I imagine they would be cheaper than the LR kit. If it was a phone specific kit then as the phones moved on the kits were often "de-installed", they probably missed (or couldn't be bothered with) the speaker - out of sight out of mind.

It does look like someone has had an issue with the wiring for the central locking and just decided to run a new wire rather than locate the original issue.
Although it looks rather crude I guess if it works then best leave well alone. At least you now know what it’s for and why someone may have done it. You could test the original wires to see it there is any continuity Question

Good luck with it Thumbs Up

The remote key receiver is in the roof I think. Could be that.

Quite possibly, however mine has the factory fit Bluetooth Smile Deffo looks like an aftermarket kit though, will try and trace it back.

I agree. I know I should leave it alone but I had things not being how they should be! Ill test the continuity at the weekend.

I would imagine the central locking would stop working as the black box is the remote receiver. Will try it though.
