I changed the front diff oil at 84,000km and was horrified what I found. Since then I am changing the front diff oil at every service and the rear diff oil every second service. I was initially given a few litres of the Castrol SAF-XO from some "promotional" stocks at a dealer but have used this up.
Yesterday I tried to buy some oil at all the usual places and like before no one carries it and so ended up at the dealer and got two litres for the special price of $127.50
So what are the proven, easily obtained and cheaper alternatives to the Castrol SAF-XO oil for diffs in Aust?
Thanks
Garry

Thanks Rob - just need who sells it locally.
Have you used it in your transfer case?

@garrycol - here is the Royal Purple list of suppliers http://www.royalpurple.com.au/index.php?pt...;state=ACT for your state.
Also here is the http://www.royalpurple.com.au/pdf_street/p2a_max_gear.pdf for the company product sheet (Gear-Max). Mention is also made in Rob's link to transfer case oil that Royal Purple sells. There may be info on their site but I didn't look for it.

Hi Garry,
Yes - changed oil in front diff, e-diff (Max Gear 75W-90) and transfer case (Synchromax), at about 100,000km.
FWIW, I haven't noticed any difference in behaviour/noise/economy since the change.

Thanks for the information - I notice that only Royal Purple is mentioned so I take it there are no other alternatives. The Royal Purple site of suppliers is a bit out of date but I can order it through AutoPro - Autobarn doesnt exist here anymore.
Cheers

Thanks for that Rob - I now wish I had put this thread up before buying the Landrover Castrol product - I am doing my service right now and have just done the oil filter and oil and about to do the diffs - subject to how the front diff oil is will depend whether I stay with 12,000km oil changes. Rear diff oil has been in for 24000km and tfr case has been in for 24000km - intending to do the tfr case at 36,000km intervals so it will be Royal Purple all round next time - I will list that seller in my sellers list.
Cheers
Garry

For my diffs I use penrite Pro Gear 75W-90. For the diffs any any GL-5 oil in the correct viscosity will work fine (unless you have the rear diff lock, then I'd be putting in a spec that LR recommend) Transfer Case Im using royal purple syncromax in the transfer case as it was the only alternative oil I could find that listed the shell spec.
