Newbie kit list help

Other than a half day LRE session, not been off road before but keen to try my D4 on something other than tarmac.
Planning initially to hopefully join some like minded people at a pay and play type venue, nothing adventurous and nothing that might do some damage.

So with that in mind, what kit do I need to acquire? Read stuff about ropes/strops and shackles. But would this do the job without the need for shackles or am I still best to get shackles? If so, would I be best just going for the heaviest rated one's? There are some 6tonne ones on this same website.
http://www.extreme4x4.co.uk/acatalog/DUPLEX_QUICK_STROPS.html

What else do I need to buy or take with me?

Thanks

Shackles are always good. As is a decent jack and breaker bar with 22 mm socket. Remove the front and rear recovery point covers before you go. If you feel like spending a lot of money then some protection might be advisable depending where your going, and some decent AT tyres. Some sturdy walking boots and some gloves.
Theres a start the list can go on depending what / where your going. But I'm sure other people there would be able to help if you got stuck.
And a selection of tools.

Have had a quick look at that link.

Working Load Limit of 14 tonnes?

To put it bluntly, no way!

WLL is basically strength divided by a safety factor. Typical safety factors are in the region of 5-7 and not 1 which they have used.

The strength of that green webbing is probably 14 tonnes throw in typical safety factor and you are talking WLL of about 2 tonnes.

I could not make out a WLL on the hook.

Also it can be difficult to safely fit some hooks into some recovery eyes!

Learn the difference between different type of equipment. Towing and winching is a lot different to recovery especially snatch recoveries.

Thanks for replies.

Re: the last one, looks to be a bit of a minefield, can you recommend any websites that would worth a look at, so that I am buying the right kit?

Keen to get the essentials, but has to be the right type of kit or its pointless.

AT Tyres - tick - picked up spare set wheels with a decent set of Grabbers on them Smile

Shovel
Something to kneel on (bit of ply, foam, etc)
Something to put the jack on, thick ply or proper jacking base if bottle jack
Decent jack
Socket set
Breaker bar
Gloves
Wheel chocks (can use std LR ones)
Spare wheel or two
Some shackles
Strop (note that unless stated strops are for pulling and not dynamic recovery)

Have a look at http://forum.lro.com/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=38795

Generally you would want 3.5 tonne shackles.

Get the strongest shackles you can, IE rated to 6-8ton possibly and then a recovery strop or two rated to about half that. It should then in theory be a lot safer as the strop will snap before the shackle and the strops lose speed and energy very quickly when they go compared to the steel shackles!!

Youtube will scare the life out of you looking at broken recovery points that can and do kill people!

Seems there is a massive range of prices of recovery straps, this seems on the upper end of the scale. Am I better to invest more? What am I paying for in this, that I am not in something have that price.

That's a snatch strap so it's used for snatching stuck vehicles out, recovery straps are not elastic and are more akin to tow ropes. Snatch straps are more expensive but have to be used carefully.

Right ok, thanks, so considering my novice status, would you suggest just a recovery strap would be sufficient for my needs (for the time being)? I have no intention to do anything very adventurous at this stage, until I have built up some experience.

If you go to a pay and play site, do your research first - many open ones are great if you have a knackered old 90 or a suzuki and don't care if it gets trashes, but not so good if you have a nice motor.

IMHO Best go to one that is all one club (Mark Y opened up their club day at Sibbertoft the other week to Disco3 and Disco3club members for example) or one arranged by friends.

You might be better looking at a Land Rover Experience trec day as per the link? I have done a few of these with LRE South West and you will thoroughly enjoy it learn about your D4s capabilities with the support available if you need it.

Yarwell is not too bad, some days you get some nutters, but generally all are courteous and there is a range of terrain, I've taken the D4 a couple of times. Just don't drive where you are not comfortable going.
