Expedition Preperation for the D3
Hi all,
Ok, i have got the ball rolling, had 10 come round on tuesday to fit the following:
Winch Abar
RAI
Front and rear light guards
G4 roof rack
What a job! Great as always!
So what is next?
I am looking to prepare the D3 for extended expeditions ie Africa, etc and would really appreciate any comments and ideas for what presents to buy the D3 in order to turn it into the ultimate expedition vehicle.
Apart from the above, at the moment it is a totally standard 54 plate S.
Saw 10's fridge set up in place of the second row middle seat while he was fitting the kit. Was really impressed so might go for one of those installs, which fridge? fridge / freezer combo?
Advice or ideas on anything and everything re expedition prep would really help me out!
Maybe some pics of what you all have done to yours for those extended camping, etc trips. Both internal and external.
Thanks guys.

Hi Steve, glad you're happy!
Obviously i'm biased but the following would go some way to suiting your needs
LR cargo barrier / dog guard
Mantec / LR sump guard (get the winch one if you intend to fit a winch later)
Aux. battery & outlets
Engel 40 litre fridge
If you're getting serious, the Britpart / Rasta 4x4 spare wheel carrier and rear drawer unit (as Chris Tyler has installed) are good additions
kit-wise, theres a lot of debate and some of it is obviously trip specific, i'd suggest the following 'generic' items:
Takla air jack
50mm waffle boards
8 metre recovery ropes
first aid & burns kit
Sat. phone
air compressor & puncture repair kit
Hardwired GPS system & h/held backup
etc..
etc...

Borrowed Mossy's 35 Engel and I have to say it's the DB's. Low power consumption and Increadibly quick at cooling down to the right temperature.
Presume you've got some MT/R's or other off road tyres already?Bodsys Brake Bible

Hmmm, i feel another session of fitting coming on 10. At least it will be in Lincoln next time. GFar less way to travel.
Fridge, mantec guards and dog guard are defs.
Havent yet got some off road tyres. Have been recommended the AT2s as im on 18's at the minute. Is it worth upgrading to 19's and fitting MTRs??Say goodbye to the D3 soon. Say Hello to 110 double cab xs stornaway grey

tyres are generally a personal choice, AT2's are a good general purpose tyre whereas the Goodyear MT/R's are a serious offroad tyre - although suprisingly good on-road
if you only have / want one set of rims, go for the AT2's, if you want to preserve them and are happy to swap around, get some 19" ims shod with MT/R's

Maybe thats the way to go.
Ok 10....I guess it makes sense to do this in stages, generally linked together.
So stage 2 i think makes sense to put the split charge system in, and whatever is going to be connected to it.
What would require connection to the optima apart from the fridge? Winch? Anything else? If im gonna do it, i might as well go all out. 8) Say goodbye to the D3 soon. Say Hello to 110 double cab xs stornaway grey

Fridge & outlet sockets - Winch can be added at the same time or later with no nugatory works

if you want!
12VDC is the norm although an inverter and remote sockets can be installed to give 230VAC if you need it 8)

Need some lights to cover the lovely holes in my g4 rack too. So four for the rack, and 2 to hang in the Abar. Any ideas on what to go for anyone?Say goodbye to the D3 soon. Say Hello to 110 double cab xs stornaway grey

I highly recommend a set of sliders that protect your sides, air compressor and tank. It affords you a great deal of freedom and flexibility in the tackling the obstacles you are likely to occur. Plus, with these sliders, you can use a HiLift to jack yourself out of a mudhole, over a fallen tree, etc...
We are still looking for a UK distributor. Things with our intended distributor have not worked out, so for now, direct shipping to individual customers is an option.

If planning offroad travel, get a suspension lift or you will have to replace your exhausts etc. See some Oz threads.06 TDV6 SE with many LR and after-market extras. Used only on weekends and trips out west.

Oh yes, I missed that part. Didn't realize he was a coiler. The KingSprings that provide the 65mm lift are a must if you are going to load it up heavy for true overlanding. If only for medium outfitting, I prefer the 40mm Peddars coils. They are a bit softer, and provide a much more pleasant ride with a spring rate better suited to the dampning rate of the stock shock absorbers.
I've had them both (Peddars and KingSprings). Currently have the 65mm springs fitted soley for their additional ground clearance, and it's been wonderfully enabling.
