Newbie Mechanic.....

Hi

I am somewhat in awe of people who can carry out any sort of maintenance on their vehicle. I can fill up the washer bottle and that's about it.

I'd like to get a basic understanding of how to look after my car a bit better, rather than always relying on a garage to fix basic and simple problems. I'm not looking to be able to strip an engine down.

Any suggestions as to where I could start?

start by reading up on how to do it and maybe buy yourself an old bmc or ford engine cheap as chips if you can as they are pretty simple in construction for you to learn the basics

Thanks. I'll look at night school options.

I'm also well aware of the help and advice offered on this forum - but I dislike displaying my child-like ignorance of my vehicle...... Very Happy

For an in depth understanding of diagnostic techniques and how modern engine controls work then ScannerDanner on YouTube provides excellent tutorials. For videos of the mechanical side try ericthecarguy.

For D3/D4 try a project with a guide on here (eg the Brake Bible). These will aid you knowledge and confidence, plus you can ask the author or others for advice as you go along.

Hopefully there is someone nearby who can show you the ropes too - I have taught many a forum member what I know (doesn't take long!).

Thumbs Up
