Big Thanks to Geoff and Flack
Just wanted to give a big thank you to Geoff and Mick (Flack). Drove to Geoffs place this morning for the Kent cam belt weekend, had the belts etc. done and EGR blanking and BAS remap. Well worth the drive from Chepstow, belts now done and engine running and pulling very smoothly (and a bacon sarnie thrown in too).
The Good News? Didn't need new oil pump case, mine already had the newer design.
The Bad News?, Geoff noted the steering rack was leaking fluid, main dealer job on late D3s apparently.
You win some, you lose some.
Anyway, thanks Geoff and Mick, good to meet you both and thanks for today. Arthur.

They are both forum legends.
Mick is a joy to watch at work and knows his way around the back of a TDV6 like nobody else! 8) I'm fairly certain he must hold the world record for changing that rear belt.
Geoff is always willing to offer advice and there's not much he doesn't know about a D3; makes me wish I drove an auto.
Glad to see the cambelt weekends are underway again. A great offer from two highly knowledgeable site sponsors.

Purely out of curiosity, what is it about the steering rack that makes it a main dealer job and what constitutes a late D3?
Glad everything else went to plan

While I was there Geoff called Steve at Advanced Factors and when Geoff quoted my VIN No. Steve said (if I understand correctly) that it was a model requiring a later steering rack and one currently only available to main dealers. Mines a Jan 09. Geoff might be able to clarify that.
I've been looking tonight and Craddocks list four Discovery 3 steering steering racks, one at the top and three at the bottom of this page, by VIN No range. Yep, mine is the £1276.90 one.
So I'll call in next week and see what they can do.Arthur.

Thanks, I can take the pain
The above company, and a couple of others, have eBay listings and the cost of an exchange refurbished rack seems to be around £300:00.Arthur.

Mine's an 08 and had the rack replaced last year. Warranty Direct picked up the tab but I think it wasn't as much as £1k. £880 fitted rings a bell, it was done at Lookers so main agent prices; so maybe 08 is 'earlier' and 09 is 'later'. Dunno.____

Thanks Graham. It's going into Guy Salmon on Monday for a new rear cross member (towbar recall) and I'll get a quote from them whilst I'm there.Arthur.

Thanks DrRob, Guy Salmon cancelled the tow bar refit (for the third time) so I've yet to ask either them or get a quote from Western Power Steering. It's due in this Thursday so I'll be following it up then. I'll keep Steve Norman in mind.
At the moment I'm just keeping an eye on the fluid level and it's holding pretty steady though I am doing quite a low mileage currently.Arthur.
