movement in detachable tow bar |
|
When I tow my caravan with my D3 I have noticed that there is a knocking noise. Obviously as you drive a long with the caravan on the back you get a degree of movement of the caravan when you brake go over pot holes and bumps etc and this is when the knocking happens.
With the caravan detached, there is forwards/backwards play if I move it by hand. I am 100% sure this is what the knocking noise comes from.
It has always been like it since I owned the car and it has never fallen out. The car has been in for the tow bar recall as well so if it was dangerous I hope that LR would have picked it up.
My question is, is this normal to have play in the tow bar? Does anyone else suffer with this? Am I missing any part which makes a more snug fit?

I had an old towbar, the early type without the ratchet locks behind the handle. This meant that you could actually turn the handle to a part released state without unlocking with the key or pulling the handle out. This used to knock a little, and my dealer also passed it as safe.
Anyway, a couple of months ago, some light-fingered scroat relieved me of it, and forced me to buy a new one.
My new one has a positive locking ratchet behind the green handle which means its impossible to turn the handle without first unlocking it, and then pulling the handle out before it turns. This new bracket is much tighter to fit, and has zero movement. It doesn't knock either.

thanks for the replies people.
Like I said I have had the tow bar recall done on it about a year ago and I would have thought they would have mentioned something then as it has always been like it since I've owned the vehicle (about 2 years).
Might drop in to the stealers when I get a chance and see what they say. Discovery 3, 2006, HSE, 2.7 TDV6, Java Black, EGR Blanked, New belts + tensioners. Autobox flushed +new filter.

Mine was similar to yours, knocking when towing and there was a bit of play in it.
Guy Salmon in Bristol condemned it and I had a new rear crossmember and fixed towbar fitted.
I'd get it checked out again. Arthur.
Comedy was a horse, Harvey a dog, both sadly gone. Thought I was choosing a password!
